Those forums are such a yawn these days.

Time was (jeez - my eyes are startin' to mist up) when those venerable old warhorses Emagic and Steinberg would unveil forthcoming product at the Messe and over the (many) months leading up to the new release there would be loads of discussion (and a lot of other shit too admittedly) of the product and new features.

Now, all the chatter from wareized version users is gone but so is any informed discussion of forthcoming developments or any meaningful responses to user suggestions or feedback from the developers.

The only time there is much animation is when a new maintenance release comes out and it's buggy or the company tries to price gouge on a paid update.

indeed. freedom of speech is pretty much gone. also, if you don't state your love and devotion to your chosen steinberg host you are either being patronised for "not understanding the features and the software", called an idiot, or both.

God forbid if Cubase is crashing or behaving weird on you. That's sort of thing is always obviously the users fault.

Funny (well sad actually), I see nil mentions of any new and important *host* features. That ad is just a list of new plugins (and the oh so exciting notation features...not). I would've thought a serious host update would focus on usability and workflow improvements (and the ever so important robustness and stability).

That ad seemed to be surprisingly frugal on details, it's like they cobbled it together quickly or something. Maybe "plugins" is the biggest sell for new users (lord knows enough people criticize Cubase's bundled plugs!).

I'm hoping that the wonderfully optimized engine just didn't make it into the copy.

Hah this looks like a "milestone" step towards an all-in-one authoring prog. Must admit it looks more polished than before, but one can get shoepolish elsewhere.

I wonder if there will be any bugfix upds. for sx3 still? For the sake of it.

No software of such complexity is ever free of bugs.

The real question is: can you make music with it. For SX3, the answer is emphatically, YES!

And if you can't then it isn't the software's fault.

If you look at Sonar 6 specs there are few things that are ahead of Cubase SX3.
I'm sure that Cubase 4 will have few surprises and features that noone else has. I'm not sure about the quality of the VSTi's and VST3 plugins, but I'm holding my breath on it. Hopefully Yamaha did step up to the challenge and put good things into Cubase.
I'm pretty excited about version 4.

One thing, with every new update each DAW - being Cubase, Sonar, Logic etc, become more and more alike with the features they offer.

I would rather pay full price for Sonar 6PE (which I don't have to, being S6 PE user) than subject myself the torture of Cubase.

I don't know what's new in VST 3 - that ad is the first thing they've mentioned about it.

You'd think that if they're planning on releasing sometime soon, they'd want the VST 3 SDK available now for plugin developers. Unless, of course, the major version number increase is due to marketing.

The ad looks fake to me ... but hey ... maybe I just expected more flash from their promotional people.

VST3 will likely include implementation of true side-chaining ability (without the necessary left/right or quad-left/right hack). That's been one of the last bastions of functionality for many people.

You know, I was thinking the same thing a moment ago: but the pictures are different than the small shots from msuciansfriend.com. That "All 4 You" tagline is about as lame as it gets, though.
