Very nice but too advanced for me - bpm clipping ???? Oscillators?? What the hell? I have had this plugin nearly since it's birth but a primer on what the parameters are essential for preset junkies like me. And what is Tape 1? over four years and I have never head of this feature in Ohmboyz!

Bmp clipping... This actually is a simplification. Lots of delays only count in second or ms, which musicwise rarely mean anything. So Ohm Boyz (like lots of other plugin since) allows you to choose to see delay period in BPM (Beat Per Minute) or ms (milisecond). Both graduation makes sense in different context.
Oscillator... Well, that stands for the "O" in LFO which probably in the first thing to get about modulation in general. Now your average synth works with Oscillator (withou LF it generally means that the oscillator can be fast as opposite to "Low Frequency Oscillator"). Oscillator is basically a sound generator but it also can be used as a modulator : the signal is then used as a real time automation for a parameter (as shown in the video). A minimoog is a good exemple of this double use : the thirs oscillator can either be used as a sound generator or as a modulator for the filter cutoff.
I've used those exemples on purpose - I think for the advanced users they are actually the basic word used to create sentences =) All in all those concepts are at work in many, many pluggin or hardware, and there is not a lot of them, so it may be worth the effort to get them once and for all. That will make random tweaking better =)

Thanks Red_Force. LFO's I do know about. It was the mention of oscillator in the first example that threw me - I now realize it was being used as an analogy.
Bpm clipping - Sorry I am still lost. You explain delay period which I now understand a bit better but I don't think I am getting across what is bpm clipping per se - clipping in the audio clipping sense or in terms of truncation of beat period? Sorry but I still find this suject difficult even after many years of using music software - albeit I have had to learn the little I do know all on my own wit any hands on instruction.

You're absolutely right - there are a lot of words (especially in english) to describes way less concepts.
Let's explain what clipping here describes... Usual you can turn a knob or push a fader in a smooth way. It's absolutely fine when dealing with, say, a filter cutoff, a gain, a pan... Thus in the case of delay, and in a musician's hand, the more frequent user's case is to search to reach a value that make sense, music wise. Say on half of the beat, or two third of a bar, or four bars...
Now MOST plugin in our view (and it was especially true at Ohmboyz's first release) aren't designed with that in mind - the paramereter rather works according to what happen in the audio engine. That's why with a lot of delays you ends up
- calculating a pertinent value with a formula (there as thread about tempo calculator right now on KvR)
- struggle with the GUI to have the plug use that value. Sometimes it's as dull as pushing a knob pixer per pixel...
BPM clipping is the easy solution. In most Ohm Force's plugs there is two mode regarding ALL time dependent value. Either you count them in ms, either in BPM. Ms is the classic, smooth, every-possible-values-are-equally-easy-to-reach mode. BPM implies BPM clipping. You turn the knob and it "jumps" from a possibly musically meaningful value to another. If you turn the Ohm Boyzs knob in BPM mode you'll see you can go from 1/4 beat to 1/2 beat to 1/3. You can reach some in between but just a few as the point of this mode is to let you reach easily the values you have 90% chances to want. If you want something specifically not related to your song's beat, then you switch back to ms.
As you have OhmBoyz I think it will be very clear if you try to move the period knob (would it be LFO period or Delay Period) in both modes.

Thanks Red_Force but I am still at a loss to know what BPM clipping is - what does it sound like? Sorry to be so thick but this is difficult stuff for me.

I think that the word "clipping" here is perhaps not the most appropriate term - a better term would be "snap-to". I think all that Red_Force is saying is that when you choose to set up the delay in "BPM" mode (where you can sync the delay to a specific number of beats in a bar) the delay time automatically "snaps to" the nearest musically relevant number as you move the knob/slider. It has nothing to do with audio clipping or truncation. This is pretty standard functionality in most time-dependent VST effects - hardly anything to get terribly excited about.
Mais il est Français ainsi nous le pardonnerons.

Mes-ens Slartiblartfast. Snapping perfect sense. S'il a expliqué en Francais j'aurais comprendre (?).
Now what about the "Tape 1" thingy sesribed the turorial. Never heard of that before.
Thanks,
Gordon

The manual actually calls it a "tap" rather than a "tape". Ohmboyz can generate, and individually process, up to 4 separate "taps" or delays - I think all that the tutorial is saying (although it is not entirely clear from the video) is that the preset that they started from used only the first of these "Tap A", and that they have muted it so that they do not lose the original settings, in case they want to recall them. The remainder of the tutorial works only on "Tap B" - the second tap.
While the tutorial was moderately amusing, I think it left a lot to be desired on the educational front when they cannot even use the same terminology in the tutorial as in their own manual.

Thanks Slatiblartfast
The Ohmies really need to give people like me a more educational and less off the wall (OK I mean silly) tutorial. I came away more confused than I was before.
Cheers,
Gordon

Taps and Tapes, would have been a more usefull. How to recreate Tape Delays, which were the original kind of Mult-Tap (or heads reading tape from different positions on the tape) delay effects. I also found it hard to follow. But the delay effect they did get was cool enough.

slartibartfast got it fine... Sorry about the Tape 1 / Tap 1 mess, I guess it's one of those language things. My bad
Madness : actually the preset is a rather complexe multi tap delay. It would have been more obvious if we had used Ohmboyz as an insert as we would have kept first Tap on. It's even get more advanced with the LFO applied on the send of the tap.
The tutorial... I've tried to make it informative for everyone. There are some very generic stuff about FX and delays (instert vs send, LFO explanantion, Tap delays explanation) and some very tricky (around use of LFO's).
Also I ve tried to make sure they weren't redundant with the manual and the .doc tutorial already available for eons... My idea of a tutorial is to complete the manual, so here it was more about explaining choices than the mechanic behind.
About the pace we did want to have it pretty punchy because an extra slow tempo can be boring and make way too long videos... But I acknowledge we've been over-enthusiastic
. Next ones will be slightly slower, and probably will have less elements in them.
BTW this place is as good as any to fire up your suggestions on what you would like to see next ?

Thanks Red_Force! Know that Ohmboyz was one of the first effects I ever bought back in 2003. I was satified with using it as is without exploring how to modify parameters. Thanks for pinting out the text material - i saw before but I coul onlylook at it on screen and frankly that just didn't work for me. I now have access to a decent printer here at work so I will have to read it in more comfort. Same goes for Quadfrohmage and maybe one day if I can grow a few more neurons I will get the basic of programming Symptohm Mehlohman.
but perhaps I am getting ahead of myself.
A good suggestion would be avideo tutorail on Quadfrohmage - I still have no idea how this effect can be made fit into my non-electronic music.
Cheers,
Gordon
