Sonalksis Essentials Love

I have and use both the SV-517 EQ and the SV-315 Compressor, though admittiedly not as much as I once did. As often as not I find myself reaching for Voxengo or Nomad Factory Analog Signature these days.

That said, I still use the CQ1-Multiband Compander a goodly amount (both for mixing and pre-mastering). When used carefully it can be extremely handy. It was especially useful for making a few tweaks when sending off the last project I mixed to the mastering house.

Still, I can't help but note that there have been very few significant updates (none that I know of) of any of their plugins. That is in staggering contrast to Voxengo (for example). And none of the Sonalksis plugins are so good that they would not benefit from some tweaking (the sometimes gtitty top of the EQ, for example, is I think a legitimate point).

And when you consider what Sonalksis charges when comapared to Voxengo...

Print out a copy of the manual if you get a chance on them both to understand the settings better and whatnot. It helped me a lot.

That wasn't meant as a RTFM btw, It's just helped me understand more about how the processing works too and made me a better user.

btw, there is a new Sonalksis Development blog where Dave talks about some updates coming, as well as new products and whatnot which is worth checking out.

I love the Voxengo stuff too, Aleksey has made some incredibly good plugins at amazing values. And so have a lot of other devs.

And I have detected a bit of harshness in the SV-517 and the TBK, and it would be great if they could remedy that at some point. Anyone who has had it happen should maybe post on the forums about it which might encourage them to do something about it? It's been a long time since they're done updates but I think they're getting ready to start getting it back together.

you don't want to get paid like somebody in russia doing the same work as you do i guess?
labor is cheaper there, it's harder for western programmers to compete regarding the price with guys from china, india etc.

The two compressor modes of the SV-315, (I and II), what do they exactly do in terms of sound and what do you all use them for?

Mode II is a bit more transparent and smooth where mode I is more "brutal" (that one is quite transparent too though!). Load up a drumloop and squash the heck out of it and you'll hear the differences.

Today there are many better competitors. Try SV315 against the Voxengo Marquis or the Kjaerhus stuff or the 1176LN...
The SV 517 EQ is nothing special. Have you tried the amazing AirEQ or Hydratone

I would say that the best days of Sonalksis are over.

no you aren't. in such cases you can always do a phase reverse test, which will actually prove what you are hearing. but it's indeed subtle.

Yeah, I'd say that's true, unless they get some new material out there, apart from a $200 filter! I think that one shot them in the foot a little bit, unless I misjudge the marketplace...
