On topic: As a registered user of SAWStudio (and a number of other DAW programs), I can assure you that there is nothing strange, underhanded, or manipulative going on. The users are a great bunch of people, and the developer is fully devoted to his program and his users.
Sure, some users are authorized dealers, but these are good, knowledgeable people who are not out to sell anyone a bill of goods. If you are looking for the sleazy fat guy with the cigar, you won't find it in SAW land.
Whether you love SAWStudio or hate it, if you take it or leave it--there are a lot of other programs out their to choose from, according to one's individuals needs, budgets, and requirements.
Actually, I like to compose stuff in Sonar and Cubase. When I record acoustic guitar I like SAWStudio, because each track is eight layers deep, and I like that for multiple takes. (The built-in track EQs are really great, too.)
I don't mean to pull a Rodney King, but can't we just despise the programs we hate quietly, to ourselves? Nah, just a crazy thought.
I swear, this place gets like the Urination Olympics sometimes.
Regards,
Bill OC

I think there is a bit of confusion here in this thread. I don't think it's the program that people are criticizing. At least that's not what I am doing. But rather, it's the attitude that came from some of the users a few pages back, about if you say something bad about SAW you must be a kid that doesn't know what they are talking about, or you must not be a pro, etc.
I personally(and I've said it many times) have nothing against the program, and feel that if it's valuable to you, use it, and you don't have to explain yourself. I just think that a couple of users around here give it a bad name, and even in the past the same thing has happened. It's that "elitist" attitude that you will also see in the ProTools world. I'm certified in ProTools through Digidesign, and in the process got to meet many people who use it who would tell you you are not a pro if you use anything else. That's ridiculous.
So I think that is the problem. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I think.

(Greetings from the attitude guy. I'm mellower today actually
. No more "kiddie" cracks, promise.)
BTW there are versions of SAWSTUDIO available for $1200 (same features, fewer tracks) and $300 (fewer tracks and less functionality). Still really fast and stable, still ugly, sorry.
You might want to skim the first 5 or 6 pages of the thread.koolkeys wrote:I think there is a bit of confusion here in this thread. I don't think it's the program that people are criticizing.
It can also be the inverse: "I only paid $XXX, and it does the same as [thing] for $XXXX; all the [thing] owners must be fools". But those commentators don't always understand the speed or functionality that justifies the price differential, and (especially in the case for ProTools) the interoperability between other studios, Avid video editors etc.koolkeys wrote:...It's that "elitist" attitude that you will also see in the ProTools world. I don't disagree with you kenn on you saying that it goes both ways. In my previous posts, I even mentioned that fact that it goes both ways. My post above was to clear up IMO what the actual problem was with those that are criticizing SAW. I was only speaking for one side of the argument.
Again, I agree with you that it CAN go both ways. But it's really hard to pinpoint who started what and who misunderstood who and who meant what and who edited their posts, etc. So I won't try to.

i've also met some of these guys. they think pro tools sounds better: "more like hardware".koolkeys wrote:I'm certified in ProTools through Digidesign, and in the process got to meet many people who use it who would tell you you are not a pro if you use anything else. That's ridiculous.

Yeah, but the difference is that ProTools sounds like the hardware it comes with. So it's "kinda" true with that. Although the software itself doesn't sound different.

Kooleye, do you own SAW and use it on a daily basis profesionally? I see from your site, you do loop based music. SAW would not be useful to you. It is for real musicians. You would be best off with Fruity Loops. If you like it, good. You'll just have to realize that most will not agree with you. It doesn't make you wrong in your choice though.

Umm, I don't know what you're talking about. I don't use loops at all in my music. And I've been a musician for almost 20 years, and live and breath here in Nashville in the music business. And actually, I don't have any songs up at the moment. So you have me TOTALLY wrong. I do acoustic contemporary Christian music. I'm a real musician. I think your comments about SAW being for "real musicians" is totally unneeded. And I think, based on your comments, that you somehow are taking an elitist approach. Trust me, you have no idea apparently about what "professional" is if you happen to think that only professionals use SAW.
Anyways, I don't know where you got that I do loop based music. But you're wrong.

Hi everyone thanks for discussing my product, yes, yes... I'm the creator of SAW. If it does not suit your needs choose my other product, HAMMER.

By the way, just for the record. You likely couldn't take me to even one studio here in Nashville that runs SAW. I would almost put money on it. That doesn't mean it's not good. And it doesn't mean it's a reflection of SAW users. But it's FAR from an industry standard on this side of the pond. It's not even widely used here.

By the way, to make it clear. I'm not criticizing the program SAW, or the users. I'm only talking about the attitude that came out in the last post that was directed at me. That post was totally ignorant, and was also VERY misinformed. I have nothing against SAW or it's users. If it works for you, great. You shouldn't use anything else.

I wish the other SAW users here would stop dishing out insults, you'll get alot farther by pointing out what you like about SAW without dissing the people that use other software.
And there's people out there making $$ using FL or Acid or an MPC or whatever. It's about the music, the tools are a means to an end. Like I said before.. for me, SAW is the most transparent DAW software I've used so far, meaning it gets in the way of my creativity the least. For me that's really REALLY important. Is it worth $1800 or $1960 more then Reaper?? That's for you to decide. For the record, I have the Reaper demo installed and I'm very impressed with what it can do, especially given the price and the fact that it hasn't been around that long.
