I am trying to use pentagon as an fx unit for the first time but I am getting no sound to come out. What am I doing wrong please? Specifically I am trying to use it as a vocoder and I clicked on it and said voice modulator on but no sound comes out when I put in a vocal channel??

that's not it because even when I put in a synth still no sounds come out.scuzzphut wrote:i guess you probably need to send some midi notes to it

no - I mean you need to route some midi notes to Pentagon.
most other synth/vocoders work like that - you route audio into the audio input, then you play them with midi, just like if you were using them as an instrument.

ok not totaly clear but I have a better idea now. I will work on it some more. If you want to explain more I will be checking this more. thanks so much. Never used penatgon as fx before or a vocoder.scuzzphut wrote:no - I mean you need to route some midi notes to Pentagon.

edit: still lost...I am using project5 so if anyone can walk me through this would really appreciate it. This is getting frustrating!!

ok
most vocoders work by accepting two audio signals
*the modulator - typically the human voice
*the carrier - typically a sustained synth chord
these two are discombobulated and the vocoder effect is heard
in the world of vst , we have a nifty alternative, where the plugin which is doing the vocoding (pentagon in your case) can also generate the carrier.
so if you can insert pentagon as an effect on your vocal track , then route midi to it and play it like an instrument, the output of the synth will be used as the carrier instead of being played straight.
sort of thing

ok thanks for all your help. I really do thank you. All I can figure out to do is insert the pentago fx as an effect, then I loaded up a synth like normal and play some keys but nothing comes out unless I turn the effect (pentagon) off. I can't figure out what to do from here? Thanks for all your replies man, nice of you to tkae the time. I tried to look in the manual but I don't have it for some reason. I am going to see if I can download it again.

I don't know if this helps but
from the manual...
Voice Modulator
Off
On
A Voice Modulator allows controlling any Pentagon I sound with your voice or
any external audio source. Just turn it on, use Pentagon I as effect and send MIDI to it
(don't worry, you don't need to sing in tune
.
The 18 bandpass filters on Voice Modulator are adaptative, so any audio content can be
routed to it to get weird effects
It's much better to use Stereo Wav files (you can easily convert mono to stereo files with
SoundForge or CoolEdit).
Mono files will work, but they will make a different effect, not so smooth.
This effect is best used with the Pentagon I_fx.dll.
The Voice Modulator On/Off setting is global but it's status can be saved within a song

Alex,
Don't load up a synth.
Here's the sequence
Add pentagonfx as an effect on your *vocal* track - you do have a vocal track, right? that's what vocoding is about, after all
now - you will not hear anything from the vocal track at all - this is normal.
next - create a new midi track with *no* instrument associated.
add some chords to the midi track
route the midi track to the Pentagonfx that you loaded as an insert in the vocal track.
press play.

Reminds me of being a newb and trying to use your plug, scuzz.
Happy memories.
I should bump the "VST fx that accept midi notes" thread. I still strongly associate those first with scuzzphut plugs more than anything else.
Wish I knew Project 5, ATS.

This might be interesting, especially stratcat33511's step by step
