An *extremely* valid point. Unless you don't miss something truly essential in the host you're familiar with, why make a switch? Sure, one may miss a few (maybe even a lot) of kickass things, but in the end it'll just confuse you. Just as it (still, *sigh*...) confuses me to work in Cubase. Well, maybe I'm not confused but annoyed - but that's not the point.
One should always try to get the most of one host, IMO.
Ok, there's a few exceptions, such as subhosts (eXT and the likes) and certain specialized things (Live, Reason, etc...), but as far as the socalled "major" hosts go, any of them will let you get the job done in a reasonable manner. Yes, this even includes Cubase ;)
No, seriously, all the hosts these days are reasonably stable, regardless of the OS you're using. So I'd always prefer getting more comfortable with what I know already instead of having to deal with new menus, shortcuts (those make all the difference in speed!), mixers, paradigms and whatever permanently.
Just as I wouldn't bother becoming a full time keyboarder because I could play closed voicings, whereas my main instrument (the guitar) sucks when dealing with them.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

Nah. As said before, as long as you get things done in Cubase, why bother?

Because the grass is always greener...

Totally. I feel quite happy with Cubase now, and any folly about switching has been, well, folly. And after my brother's experiences with Pro Tools, I feel very good about using Cubase. I would love to see Logic in action, one of these days; see what the big deal is.

Too true!

Full PDC, yes, automatic allocation of multiouts, no - and THANKS GOD it isn't like in Cubase!
Seriously, this is one of the things I find WAY more elegant in Logic. I always only get the individual outs I need, rather than being confronted with up to 32 (Kontakt 2) outs when all I need is a single stereo pair.
I use Kontakt2 8 out mostly for this reason. I use BFD and/or Toontrack drum samplers in most of my tunes which have many outputs which are all active - having to assign them by hand in Logic is something I did many times but I am not sorry I don't have to do it now.

The too many tracks issue is indeed a pain. Something that would be cool is for the sequencer to notice which tracks are inactive and then allow you to hit "hide inactive"

I agree that being able to drag everything you actually want to see to whereever you want it in the mixer and arrange pages is highly desirable.

What do you mean? You can hide/show what ever tracks you want in the mixer.
History is full of two kinds of people.

I guess I will give Cubase another try one day when I have countless hours to kill.
Why?

There's no point. If it doesn't suit you, why even try to force it.
You like it or you don't. In exactly the same way, I simply cannot use Tracktion or Logic. Logic has never made any sense to me whatsoever, most likely never will. Tracktion has some nice features, but it just seems toylike to me, and won't do some midi things that seem like second nature to me in Cubase.

Nowadays I rarely even bother to try out new versions of those hosts. It's a waste of my time that I don't have. It'd take me 6 months minimum to learn a new host and be anywhere as quick as I can be in Cubase, even if I don't like everything in Cubase.

Can't be arsed.

Also can't be arsed why others don't like Cubase, and I don't expect them to waste their time trying to learn my host either.

Another pointless thread, really... :|
Aren't they all? :D

For awhile I was feeling like maybe switching, and a friend was really hyping Tracktion to me, so I gave it the real college try, and it was just hopeless. I decided to upgrade to SX 3 and I'm firmly ensconced in Cubase-land now, with SX 4 in the wings, and my album's sounding better than ever.

You're right: why force square pegs?

Post

I'm a Cubase SX 3.1 user and I'm learning LogicPro (for school purposes). I see Logic as a mix of Cubase VST and SX functionality with some of it's own tricks. For the most part I like it, but in Cubase SX I'm a lot faster.
Hopefully Cubase 4 will bring some nice functionality to the already great DAW that it is.

Sure. But you *have* to see them in the first place and *have* to set them to "hide-able" as well, one by one.

Yeah - the one-by-one thing is not cool. And I like the way, in SX 3, they made the hotspot for this drop-down even tighter than before! I like to click that area and hit "C" to speed that process up, but now it's tougher and I wind up turning on the Click Track by accident. At least you can hide them though!

You're allowed to say! You know something?

That was in jest, of course. My grass is very green and wafting gently in the breeze....
