It's not the very low cost alternative, but fair, Izotope Ozone at www.izotope.com has a section for stereo width with a graphical interface as well. Download demo and see if it's to liking.

izotope ozone...dammit lfm, i could shoot you, i thought i'd take a look and now i'm messing with the idea of getting this suite.

edit: having all of those pieces integrated into one plug is appealing and they sound better than the various plugs i have now.

gonio looks good for free. ozone has a version of that in the suite.
about gstereo...it's the M/S processor used in GMulti. i've tried gmulti and i can't hear the "spreading" when i turn up those particular knobs. playing with ozone today i hear it immediately.
inspector has a little readout showing the spread.
