When will Reason 4 come out?

Speaking of FR for Reason, another thing I would just love to see is DrReXT - with the ability to import ordinary audio loops/clips, slice and convert them to REX2 files, thus dispensing with ReCycle once and for all. Okay they would lose ReCycle revenue (probably not what it used to be anyway) but I think it would be another good selling point for Reason itself, and help it to stand out within the crowded marketplace.

My predictions for the next release:
Version number 3.5
Focus is on new devices: 2 instruments, replacements for obsolete v1.0 effects
More CV manipulation devices, but still no actual MIDI FX
Winter NAMM announcement, beta soon afterward, general availability by Musikmesse
Still no audio in, real MIDI out, or VST support
No sequencer improvements
File browser enhancements
No full screen support/resizable GUI

Reason 3 has been out for almost 18 months now, so it's definitely about time for an update. I don't expect any major surprises from Reason, but I do expect a surprise annoucement of some form, probably a new product.

Funny, I was just thinking about this yesterday: you know what I think Propellerheads should do? They should release a host with that kick-ass-optimized Reason-type engine, that does multitrack audio and maybe VST. Now they could turn Reason into a full-on host, or they could keep reason as is, develop it further as the ultimate softsynth rack, and make a new host that's handles the audio and synths, and you could ReWire reason into it.

I just wonder, when I look at Reason's CPU meter barely moving while I have, like, 20 synths/samplers loaded, what a host by these guys would be like?? 3 modern softsynths in Cubase and I'm reaching for the "Freeze" button!

I've been screaming for that for awhile now. Hopefully they've heard both you and I.

How can effects be obsolete?

v4 will undoubtedly introduce a reel-to-reel tape machine, with a virtual razor mouse cursor for splicing audio tape.

I don't think that Propellerheads will make Reason into a multitrack audio host. I think the will come up with another revolutionary protocol to succeed Rewire for integrating Reason with other audio hosts. They will probably add OSC support, too. Also, strictly wish list, I'd llike to see Reason with an object environment that's like Plogue Bidule and Max/MSP. That would be competely off the chain! At least that's what I hope because Reason is the most stable music app on the planet - I'd like it to stay that way.
I Music.

A protocol to succeed Rewire? How's about... Hmm, I dunno... VST?

;)

One thing i would like to see in Reason 4 is a better mixer. Add Mid and Low mid to the eq section. It's just such a big help in the mix.

"great memories"? Hell, you must have been cutting something else up with those razors at the same time

Actually I was thinking about starting a thread the other day entitled: "And the REAL innovaters are..."

Basically I was thinking about the latest host update announcements doing the rounds, and considering how 18 months ago Reason set the agenda all over again. Those fellas at the Propellerheads keep on doing it, don't they?

IIRC the three big deals with Reason 3 were: The Combinator, the improved Browser, and the new ReMote technology. Check out how those innovations have subsequently set the agenda for others to follow:

The Combinator - as copied by KORE and Live 6's racks
The Reason 3 Browser, which searches by sound, not device - as copied by KORE and Cubase 4. Also all the others before long!
The ReMote mapping technology - as copied by Novation's "AutoMap" and the new mapping featires in both Live 6 and Sonar 6.

Obviously Propellerhead aren't the only innovaters around, but it is really interesting to see how their recent ideas are not being adopted by all the others. When people speak of them as if they are "yesterday's news", it's great to remember that in fact they are today's news and tomorrow's news too - still thinking outside the box and coming up with stuff that *the others* are quickly influenced by.

NTHj but make sure you ask em if RX2 will ever support higher than 24bit, will exportable from other hosts and if it will be cross convertable..
