just wondering if anyone else is feeling the love for this little audio app , had it about a month now and it really has done wonders to spruce up some of my tracks, stuff you think sounds ok before sounds so much tighter, clearer, cleaner it gives my music a sparkling wash!

Post

Yep, me too. Really adds that extra bit of quality and love the air function too.

Post

I've heard about it before. Is it vst/dxi/rewire, or standalone?

Post

It's a standalone app.

today i ran some stuff through it that i have been trying to master/remaster for about the last year (on and off) its the best yet ..a keeper i think! i even did a song that i had on a local compilation that was actually mastered by one of australias best masterers (better not mention names) and i have noticeably improved its sound and balance,, -granted that he did do the whole 20 track cd in one day at a cut rate! but still har-bal is a godsend for me in my humble little studio

Post

Is it meant for mastering purposes, or is it also good as a mixing aid?

Post

It's meant for mastering, but I know that some people use it as a mixing aid. It'd be awkward though as you'd have to render the channel to get it into harbal.

Someone needs to do a step by step for this app. I have tried it but cannot get my head around it at all.

Unfortunately the demo version is an older version, but if you have the full version there's a really good tutorial with it. (And the full version comes with a 30 day money back guarantee).

Obviously for each song it'll be different and you might have to do some manual adjustment based on what you hear, but a very general rule of thumb when using harbal is:

1. Low shelve below 45 Hz.
2. Press IntuitQ.
3. Load in a reference track.
4. Match loudness to reference.
5. Add 12 - 24% of air.

I've left out multiband compression, but if you want that you could put it between steps 2 and 3. Harbal doesn't come with a multiband compressor so this step would have to be done in a different app.

i've found i dont use over about 5 or 6% air . also on the newer version you can choose the range to apply the intuitq thingo and then shelve your hi and lo as needed and a few minor adjustments if needed with the eq cursor.. its all pretty quick once you get the idea

Hey is it Harbal that outputs its eq settings for firium or am I thinking of AAMS?? I'm going to need one of these in a couple of days to assist in Mastering some tracks I've done.. And what the hell is AIR??

I haven't used AAMS but as far as I'm aware (someone correct me if I'm wrong) Harbal doesn't output its EQ settings. But I'm not sure why you'd want to?

The definition of air (in the words of Paavo the Harbal developer)
Air adds back the side component of mid/side encoded stereo into the original stereo track. It increases the relative magnitude of the side component in the stereo mix. Aurally, it makes the mix sound wider and the technique comes from an effects switch on integrated amps and boom boxes from the 70's & 80's that was referred to as "stereo wide".

So I can use the settings in Firium.

Harbal's EQ works great for me, I haven't tried firium though. If you'd prefer to use firium I don't know how to export the EQ settings from Harbal.

That was the question.. I found out that it was AAMS..
