I mean that you could control all the channels independently. a true stereo SIDECHAIN input which can be interpret by the internal envelope..

not just a pumping volumeslider following a mono sum of your trigger channel.. this may work on a mono bassline but for ducking multichannel pads with multichannel vocals. This neglects the whole idea of sideschaining.

OK, thanks, I now understand the difference technically. If you have the time, would you mind posting audio clips having the same audio content but sidechained differently?

Difference would be big in case you use stereo material.

yup got that. But could I achieve it by splitting both the sidechain input signal and the other material and then using separate peak controllers and then reuniting the output?

Look, you can not compare the Peak Controller with what a compressor with a true sidechain can do. You can NOT control the compressor with the peak controller, you can not affect it's behaviour, where as with a true sidechain you can. Same goes for ringmodulation, or other esoteric effects where the extra inputs are used for audio rate control of things.

One more example: You can not EQUALISE the peak controller data to then feed a compressor so that it only reacts to bass/mid/high frequencies. See the difference now? Though you could send the track to a separate one and equalise that track and then add a peak controller and route it to where you want it but the results would still be different as it is not feeding the compressors own detector (which is what a sidechain does).

Think of it like this: Peak Controller = envelope detector that converts audio to normal VST plugin automation data , Audio = .. hmm, well. AUDIO!! :wink:
