Aye...all gains at zero...and it *is* subtle. But by cracky, it jolly well seems like summat still going on there...

Or am I just bloody mad? :help:
no you aren't. in such cases you can always do a phase reverse test, which will actually prove what you are hearing. but it's indeed subtle.
Hard to do even a phase reverse thing.. the subtle "noise" is below 80dB I think.. but you can still hear it. It seems to be non-linear and maybe even program dependant, I'm not sure, but there sure is something there. Heck, people thought I was mad when I first reported it (some even did a phase reverse test and said it's silence but that is not true) until sonalksis themselves confirmed it.

Cheers!

this will help (make the db-scala bigger at the right bottom). it seems to peak at -99db(samplitude peakmeter). but stack 10 of them and it adds up (like -79db).

Right then...my guess is that this noise floor must be designed to interact more significantly with added filter gain, presumably in an "analog" smearing fashion. That sort of makes sense...I suppose....sort of.

Tis a bit odd that it is simply not introduced into the signal path until such time that the gain of any filter deviates from zero.

And by the by...congrats to bmanic and the missus on the arrival of your new daughter.

Yes, the sonalksis EQ is a bit weird indeed. It can however work very well as a subtle "anti-sterile" plugin on synths. Try it. Also, for some interesting data, send a 1 sample pulse trough it.. and remeber to zoom way in, you'll see a slight tail.

Oh, and thank you kilroy. :)

Interesting, I never noticed this stuff but I'm sure I'll start to notice more as I get more familiar with the SV-517. I still like the sound of it, I wonder what it's doing?

Thanks for the interesting read, do you know what it's actually doing? Is it special sauce or something we can describe?

Thanks for this link, mate...pretty much solves the mystery for me, then.

Does anyone have any tips on using these? Things they've found work in certain situations, or ways to get them to do interesting things? I've been getting good results tighting up my synths from the SV-315 using the Smooth preset and then just turning down the thres to about 3 or 4 for a little glue, and sometimes more to make 'em sticky sounding :)

Something interesting to do might be to try and stack 50 SV-517's and see if we get something audible out of some simple material like a sine wave. Might be a fun test to see if we can figure out what it's doing :)

I did insert about 20 of them in series at one point to see how it affects the signal. That's when I came to the conclusion that it is dependant on the incoming signal transients, kind of like program dependant. I'm sometimes using it on synth sounds as a subtle "enhancer", inserting 3 or 4 of them in series.

.. yes, I'm mad as a brittish cow!

Now, I'm not at all prissy about EQ'ing - but I'm curious how/why you need you need 3-4 EQ's for "subtle enhancing"? Just curious about others' techniques.

Eh? did you read the thread?

The Sonalksis EQ imparts subtle non-linearities while no EQ gain is used, it's simply enough to keep them switched on. See the link to the sonalksis forum that I posted earlier in the thread.

I made a couple very subtle presets for the SV-517 that I load on certain things. I made one specific for drums that adds punch to the low end and a little oomph around the snare and high hats and cuts the mids out a little bit to make the kicks and snares stick out.

it's super subtle (+or- 1 or 2 dbs on each band) but works well on a lot of material. We should share some presets around.
