When will Reason 4 come out?

Since going to Reason I've found the lack of choice to be strangely "freeing", so I no longer get stifled by which VST to use, or sidetracked like I used to.

I agree to this partly. But the problem is that the Reason synths don't actually sound that good. Hence the reason for me to look elsewhere.

Now if the Props, and they are quite capable of doing this, made the synths sound less like the VAs of ten years ago and more like the modern VSTi, then this would not be an issue.

I should also add that resisting the urge to use more VSTi should be down to us, the users, and not the application.

Instead of picking which one to use, Live or Reason, why not use both?

Because Live doesn't send midi data to the Reason rack on time. This is a fault with Live's rewire implementation, which in other respects is pretty much perfect.

Reason should always have to be used with its own devices and sequencer if you need the playback timing to be correct.

Nothing wrong with this, except I prefer to work in one sequencer only.

If it wasn't for the first not drop, then Tracktion would probably be one of the best rewire hosts out there.

I do respect your opinion on this, and I know many other agree (if not most). Though what I've heard some people do in Reason using just its synths, to my ears, sounds just as good as anything. I do think it takes more effort using Reason than more moderns VSTs because of its modular nature, however.

I do agree there--though I'm glad in a way that Reason doesn't because I know what I'd be like if it did, a kid in a candy store with all the great freeware VST that's about

I think Reason is tons of fun.. I don't care about all the crap said about it. I'd rather take Reason with me on a deserted island than be paid £1 million pounds to stay here and only use Reaper

Maybe some of the "out of the box" default patches don't sound that great, but I've found you can get a lot out of just the subtractor!

Lucille, that sounds really good to me. I know that you have had strong opinions against the sub for a long time, but this really does sound killer. Not just the tune, but the sound itself is excellent.

Thanks. The default subtractor patches really don't show it to the best of it's ability. These are sounds I programmed. And the Combinator really lets it shine now, being able to save patches with stacking and effects.

This is an excellent use of the Subtractor. There are some excellent sounds there. It just goes to show that the Sub's capabilities are superb.

My problem with the Sub is not the range of the sounds that one can get with it, it has after all, one of the finest 'front panels' as synth can have. No, my problem is that audibly aliases. Try making your track in 88.2kHz and downsampling to 44.1kHz and then compare the two. It is quite a difference, although it is not likely to be heard on an mp3.

Yeah, the Subtractor definitely aliases. Like, a lot. But you clearly know the workaround, so what's the problem? Just render at 88.2 and downsample. I personally don't mind the aliasing. I won't say I prefer it over an anti-aliased synth, but it just doesn't bother me. And this applies to every synth, not just the ones in Reason.
