What?!? Why? These are both very robust MIDI and Audio editing environments. As a former user of both, I'd be curious to know.

I still am willing to try Cubase 4. I do love Sonar, FLS and eXT but I am not so closed-minded to expect advantages with the latested version. Last version that I tried in detail was SX1 and I did not "get it" at all. I am now more experienced and perhaps might acquire a taste for the strangeness that is Cubase 4.

This is what I would do:

Buy a cheap Cubase SX2 or 3, updaate it and give it a go for a month or two. If you end up not liking it, sell it and get Sonar instead. The opposite is not possible since Sonar cannot be sold, or rather is worthless when sold.

Well, they say it is not possible! But what about the other manufacturers? They do allow to resell your software, there must be a reason for it.

YES! It's a nice try by Cakewalk to limit user rights in their terms and conditions, to boost up their sales! There is often no chance for a manufacturer to deny support an upgrades - thanks to european laws.

Thanks for all your replies. I've gone for Sonar, the 5 Studio Edition version bundled with the UA25. If I get on ok with it I'll upgrade to 6SE or maybe even 6PE? If I don't, I'm sure it'll have some tools I'll use that Orion maybe hasn't.

Choice was made by...

1: I found out that UA25 can redirect ouput back in digitally at the switch of a button making recording of streams a doddle. Sort of sold the interface to me and Sonar came in that bundle really cheap from Turnkey.

2: I could have coped with a dongle but not having to connect my DAW to the net to authorise the dongle. I refuse to do that so Cubase won't be going on my hard drive ever!!

Not that it matters now, but this isnt true.. YOu can authorize your dongle from any computer, At least this is how it was when did it a few years back.. I can't rememeber all the specifics, but I certainly hve never had my DAW online..

I agree with Killvehicle. I was a little puzzled by your comment regarding the net authorization. I upped with Cubase at SX2 and don't recall having to log on for auth. Likewise for my SX3 installation.

BTW, aren't there dongle-less copies of Cubase SE or SL floating around for demo purposes? I think these versions of Cubase are included with most hardware interfaces now.

Funny, I did a fair bit of reading to get to that assumption. It wasn't just 1 persons opinion. Oh well.

I have to say the UA25 swung the deal really and the fact that full version Sonar 5 was a cheap addon in the package. Not like when you get Live Lite or Cubasis. The last time I played about with Cubase was V3 or something at a mates and I didn't get on with it, that's when I found Orion.

I BELIEVE, Cubase LE is dongle-less. SE and SL have the dongle. Whatever version came with the Novation Remote 25 for Cubase had a dongle with it.

To many letters after 'CUBASE.' SE, SL, LE, SX--kind of like buying a car. Kind of nice that they're throwing out SX with Cubase 4.
