wow, you must be enormously stupid to even mod that screenshot and write that long pots and even start a thread here before you even know Reaper's basics... :nutter:

What do you think is the 'docking' in Reaper for?

:lol::

Post

Well, maybe I am stupid, to waste my time giving tips to developers. What the hell, windoze it's the top of the iceberg, we don't need better sofware ... what we got is great.
:?

Post

it's a different thing to 'give tips to developers' or to ask the whole application to be recorded...

edit: dumbest typo ever :dog:  - I meant of course 'recoded' not 'recorded'

get to know the programme you are criticizing and then make requests which are in line of it's specific architecture - e.g. with you 'tabs'-idea that would mean:

- being able to dock the timeline

- being able to pull the docking border all the way up to the top

and perhaps even:

- being able to have the dock-tabs on the top rather than on the bottom as it is now

and that's it - three specific requests instead of
- Mixer, Devices (VSTi GUI), Track view, Piano roll etc should be in different tabs :
Why on earth open and close 100's of windows all the time when you are experimenting ? You open the piano roll, add a few notes , you notice the volume is too loud (must go to mixer). So you close the piano roll, and open the mixer, fix the problem, then you close the mixer, open the piano roll again to continue your work. No, this is not the way to do things. Piano roll, mixer, vst guis are different things like in hardware. You don't arrange your studio desktop all the time do you ? You need the mixer, you put the mixer on the table...then you need a synth, move the mixer somewhere else, put the synth on the table.
Tabs, use multitabbed document concept and you will reduce the wasted time of your user, and he will smile more and arrrghhh less!

- What I don't like in Reaper :
* Mixer track docked to the lower side of the window, or floating ? No, use tabs!

there's lots of other funny stuff in your post as well...

A good host must have pattern based tracks too (Orion, FL Studio), because then you just insert patterns to the track view , and not copy paste a lot, and !!! you can change all of the copys from changing one pattern!!!
I disagree here. In some senses, the Ghost clips (aka energyXT) or Groove Clips (Sonar, etc.) offer much better pattern functionality AND allow you keep them all on one track. The power should preferably be in the clips, not the tracks. *

You only have to look at the Playlist in FLStudio to see it looks like hurricane ripped through a lego set...

* - in fact, I just remembered that Reaper's default way of looping MIDI clips works perfectly well as it is.

Post

First of all why did you get offensive from the start ??
Did you sleep ok last night?
Those were just a few ideas I'd like to see in a host like Reaper.
If we take it like this, then everybody who uses Orion, FL Studio, Acid, Live are stupid - funny people, and everybody should use Cubase on 10 displays.
Everybody does have the right to request his own needs, and beeing different does not make you funny.
:idiot:

yes, but this alone of course doesn't offer the same functionality like ghost clips do - but the way Reaper stores midi as individual midi-clips works just as ghosts do

(but when you close the editor after editing a clip and Reaper asks for a confirmation to save the file it should offer 'save as new copy')

no_signal, I can't say I agree with most of your suggestions. First, the interface is already tabbed, except it's at the bottom, not at the top.

Then, you don't need to close the MIDI editor to adjust the track volume, you can still access it both on the track and the mixer while the MIDI editor is open.

Insert effect. I don't know what the limit is, or even if there is one, but it's certainly more than two as I've used up to 8 at one time. And reordering them is as easy as dragging them wherever you want.

The patern based thing is up to discussion, I personnaly hate it, I prefer the way it is.

Hardwired EQ? No thanks, takes screen real estate for nothing, I don't want it.

Automation track in the piano roll à la CoolEdit? Since when does CoolEdit does MIDI? I don't get that one.

I think, personal opinion, that you went a bit far with the request, which are basically changing the program altogether, before even understanding the very basic of it (since, to quote you: "i'm not sure how Reaper does it, as I used Reaper just a little, and I still have no idea how to assign a vst output , and add a midi track to the project").

I suggest spending some time to learn it a bit better before making request such as those, it really is easy to learn, and then you will be able to make eduquated request.
No, that wasn't me.

Ok, I understand the feedback from my post.

Yes, the interface is tabbed, but my idea was separating things to different tabs (timeline, vsti panels, mixer etc) so then you can switch views with only 1 click.

Agreed. Volume was just one example. But same applies to opening a vst panel instead of the mixer.

I was speaking in general about hosts. There arte hosts like Orion allowing only 2 inserts.

Who is talking about removing features here? Nobody sayed to change the actual concept, but adding a new feature.

Cool Edit 2.0 does midi IIRC.
Who sayed Automation track in the piano roll ?

Fine. When I'll have the time, I will design my own host.

I don't have time. I'm a hobby musician and I'm happy if I get 2 hours in a week to play some music, so I'm searching for a host with great usability, easy to learn. And I'm sure you all hate those hundreds of extra clicks inside your hosts when making music.

I consider this subject closed.

What a funny screenshot. REAPER 0.931! Great - where did you get that one, in an antique shop? And everything I see on it is implemented in a much more clever and attractive way in - what do we have today - REAPER 1.19... ;) Docking, tabbing and floating all around.

And do get some of the new themes and icons. This is designed by Akoustic for instance:

And this one is by dln:

Get them all over at Cockos, I'd say!

Yes, REAPER has come a long way in it's ability to customize it's graphics, to ones taste. Those are some gorgeous GUI's, BTW. 8)

I have to say that one thing in the original post that seems to me to be a very good idea has been overlooked - namely, having the main waveform view as a tab. You should be able to undock the docker, then dock the main waveform view in the docker along with everything else. This could be handy for people using one monitor. As far as I am aware, the docker is always on top of the main view.

Post

one thing that may be great for reaper would be to have different "types" of tracks.... one "Acid" type track, for instance, where you can paint out loops, stutter them up nicely, knowing that the track is "owned" by that one loop....

msn messenger is my email as well.

not sure if this is what you mean but crtl+d shows/hides the docker... :)
