I've sent an email to Ableton's tech support about this problem, but I figure I can use as much help as I can get. Hopefully this is the right forum to post this on.

I've been using the version of Live that came with my M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 (Live Lite 4.0.4) for a couple of months now. Up until a few days ago I had no problems with it. However, it has recently started crashing unexplainedly. Sometimes I'll get the Windows error dialog box "this program has encountered a problem and has to close, would you like to send an error report?" but sometimes, the program will simply disappear and its process in Task Manager will shut itself down. I've searched through the Ableton forums, and have come to believe that the culprit is a plugin, namely a plugin I use called EZ Drummer. What puzzles me is that this is not a new plugin that I've just started using. I've been using it since I got Live, and only a day or so ago has it started to cause problems.

As we speak I'm downloading the Live 5 Demo to make sure this isn't just my wimpy Lite version of Live. As I said above, I have emailed Ableton and am waiting to hear back from them. In the meantime I'm stumped (and more than a little peeved...). Any thoughts, or anybody ever have this problem and fix it somehow?

You can upgrade to Live Lite 5.2 you know. Help>Check for Updates.

Thanks for the heads up, I knew that my version could be upgraded but was unaware as to how to do it.

Unfortuneately, the problem persists even in thenew version of Live. Ableton tech support has told me to update my Live (which I have) and to ensure I've got the newest ASIO drivers. But I'm a pretty big noob. If they mean the drivers for my M-Audio soundcard, then I'm up to date. But if they mean just ASIO drivers, then might anyone be able to point me at some?

Well don't I feel like an idiot - I have up to date ASIO drivers, I just wasn't using them! :dog:

I had to go in and switch from Direct Sound/MME to ASIO, and it seems to have fixed my problem so far. The question of why Direct Sound suddenly stopped working still puzzles me (I had been using Direct Sound all along up till now) but so long as Live is back in working order I'm not overly concerned.
