I want to buy a digital recorder to sample people talking, cars, industrial ambients, dishes, bottles or something like that to use it in a musical way.
I saw a M-audio and it looks fine. What about the Sony Mz20?
Thanks!

Tks! It's a good one. Cheaper than the M-audio's one. It has condenser mics? Very good point.
I like this one.

I'm curious too, and they aren't showing the S/N or any other commonly used stats to compare.

Apparently there is a new FR2 light version coming out which looks cool. I may get one myself! Its much more affordable than the FR2, but should fit many of the same purposes.
Probably wont be as robust, and the is likely to be cheaper. But hey, you cant have it all, right?
If you want to go really cheap, then the Creative Nomad's are alright. I used one for quite a while. Far from ideal, but mine will record 16/44 wav pretty well. I used it with an external preamp mind you.

I've preordered the Zoom H4, which supposedly will ship October 1st... I'll let you know what it's like when I get it.
I will say that probably the first thing I'll upgrade is to a 2 GB SD card.

That would be awesome Greg. If you're doing 96k then you'll need those 2 gigs.

Edirol R-09 is very nice...but be careful using the "AGC"... it's one of the 4 mini switches on the back side: lo cut- good for getting rid of wind noise in field; ext mic stereo/mono; lo/hi gain- good for recording in really loud places
; and "AGC"- Automatic Gain Control. The only decent use I can see for AGC is for recording lectures with a soft spoken professor. AGC seems like a really annoying non adjustable compressor and it (in my experience) doesn't behave very naturally. My limited advice to anyone using one of these little buggers (R-09, R-1, the m-audio one, etc...) would be to use 24bit48Mhz record settings and a lower input level so as not to get close to peaks. with 24bit resolution, ya have room to boost in post without much distortion....and though I can only speak from my experience with the R-09, it's clipped peaks are NOT the good kind of distortion
All said- I can definitely recommend the R-09, but I'm certain there will soon be much better options out there for even cheaper (...there probably already are
)
edit- snap! AND it records 96Mhz
now I want to hear from somebody after they've had theirs for a few month!

The dual XLR/1/4" inputs were the major feature for me. I've heard some bad stories of the M-Audio, so hopefully the Zoom H4 will do right what they did wrong.Genetic_Junk wrote:That would be awesome Greg. If you're doing 96k then you'll need those 2 gigs.
The one downside to the H4 is its low battery life. Unless you keep on top of rechargeable batteries, the 4 hours won't last too many sessions. In my opinion, the sound effects/samples I'll be recording probably won't be too far from an outlet, especially when using a nice long extension cord. So that way I won't have to worry about two AA batteries every time I use it.
