I'm looking for an effect that will alter the pitch of a sound either up or down on a timeline. Sort of like an envelope filter, but for pitch.

Is there such a thing?

You should be able to create a pitch envelope in any host that has automation with spline based curves.

yes,

but I want it to do it while the sound is coming in. I can't do it all by hand. I don't even know if such an effect exists.

Something like Discord 2 from Audiodamage might suit your needs. The pitch shifts are normally delayed, but you can get the delay down to 1ms so it's essentially realtime. understand though, that real-time pitch-shifting generally does not sound natural at all - since pitch is a function of frequency, and frequency is time-domain, "pitching up" means "speeding up" and it's impossible to "speed up" something which hasn't happened yet. A pitch-shit algorithm essentially makes an eductaed guess at what the audio would sound like at a given pitch.

There are also a number of good buffer-based tools that can manipulate pitch pretty well - these by necessity introduce some latency, though.

thanks uvacom,

I've come to the conclusion...what I want and how I want to use it doesnt really exist.

wouldn't a pitch transposer have that feature? i would have thought that a high end unit like the eventide would have pitch envelopes as well as fixed intervals by footswitch control if nothing else. i'm sure the unit had LFOs, so it would stand to reason there's some sort of sync control.

oddly, i still haven't seen anyone anywhere ever mention pitch transposer software.

The effect is called "pitch shifter" and most allow the shifting amount to be controlled by a midi cc or vst automation.
We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Image
My MusicCalc is served over https!!

The only one I know that will do this under automation is Melodyne. You would have to "plug it in" as a rewire.. Oh did you say free??

AutoMidi CC by Fretted Synth
Auto Midi CC, converts signal Level (velocity) to MIDI CC

Route the envelope's CC to the pitch param in the pitch shifter. Even a sociopath like you should be able to figure it out. I post this because Fretted's little plug is ingenious and will help a lot of people.

digitech whammy pedal does that.. but not midi automated, you have to use ur foot

Check out Ohm Force's Hematohm, you can get some really interesting pitch stuff going on with the LFOs in that. Magic plugin and hardly anyone ever talks about it.
