HI

i am trying to convert all of my ex-band demotapes onto cd.
i have recorded eveyrthing in Digital format, but the his of the old cassettes is very noisy...
is there soem good plug that works great in eliminating this kind of hiss...

freeware or not (well, not over 100$ maybe), i need to do this kind of job...

audacity maybe?

Audacity has a noise removal tool. I've found it works good, but not great. It should help remove some of the tape hiss, but if you try to remove too much noise, you usually end up with noticable digital artifacts that sound harsh and metallic.

The good old Cool Edit 96 has a waaaay better noise reduction tool than the Audacity one !
The JS noise reduction free ones aren't that bad, either, but not as good as the Cool Edit one (which take an imprint of your noise in a very efficienet way).

yes, i tried audacitry noise removal, but it removes too much of higher frequencies and the final sound is quite dull...
if i lower the settings there's still too much noise...
need something with better settings/algorythms...

Adobe Audition. The noise reduction algorithm has been greatly improved (largely with the "spectral decay" settings) over the old one in Cool Edit.

Recently, i also rade that the free spectral plugin DtblkFX was good at it.
Never tried it, ,BTW, Cool Edit is perfect for removing my hum sounds.

Download the Sound Forge 8 demo; I believe it's fully-working for 30 days. The NR plugins are quite good. I use them all the time for field voice recordings.

thanks bduffy, i have SF8, but cannot obtain optimal results with its NR features...
i am downloading Audition DEMO to see if it works better...

Redunoise from Voxengo seems pretty good as well.

Need a good denoiser - deHisser for OLD cassettes.
