It makes you wonder what sort of people are running Steinberg …………customer loyalty can only go so far………..I bet the likes of Cakewalk are rubbing their hands over this….. seems like they have a great product in Sonar 6 and as some have said…. "It's looking sweeter by the day"

Which comment? "Don't use cubase"? I find he usually says next-to-nothing.

Initially I thought this was fairly bad. Gut reaction was that they should support old formats etc.


But I thought for a wee while...and actually it's no worse than many many other companies. It's just the way of things. Look at Win98; it's really not that old, but it's getting harder and harder to run anything on a Win98 system. I keep my old PC for t'internet and basic word-procaessing and games etc. It won't run some newer games because it's just too slow. It's getting more difficult to run t'internet...recently Zonealarm ceased supporting 98, so any new threats may slip past it for all I know. The latest versions of word etc don't run that well on 98. In fact we've found the whole Windows Office suite is a bit shaky on the old PC.

Formats change, old formats die off.


And then I look back for several years and I really can't remember the last time I used anything DX. Not since maybe 2001 or thereabouts.


Do any of you seriously still use DX plugins that are legitimate? When I think of any of my old DX plugins...they've all been superceded in the last 5 years. I have none that are DX-only that I haven't already replaced with better plugins and alternatives.


Maybe Steinberg should have backwards compatability to year dot. I still have some .arr songs from ver1.0 - TBH I haven't even tried to load them into SX - I seriously doubt I could though. And even if the barest midi info could be loaded, I couldn't use the IPS and various other things from even later version like v3. And I used the IPS quite alot. Even if I could load old songs, I would have serious difficulty doing anything with them. I have most of the drumbeats done on an AkaiS950. I still own the S950, so I can actually do it...but really, I can't be arsed. I have the perfect capability to do all my old songs, but I know I won't because loading up and setting the old sampler is too much hassle, and loading the midi from Atari Cubase is questionably possible. PSP don't make any plugins at all that are compatible with Win98 AFAIK - certainly several of their latest plugins from several years back crashed my Win98 system. And they weren't the only company at all. So...it doesn't bother me they've lost DX. Shit happens. Basically you never have to upgrade anything; you can use your old system to do what you bought it for - but if you don't, then you soon can't use anything new. It just is.

We accept new OSs making old ones redundant. We accept new upgrades of many apps making old ones redundant. I used to use Norton...a 2002 version couldn't be upgraded - I had to buy a whole new version from new. I just was that way. (I don't use Norton at all now...).

DX is dead. The writing has been on the wall for quite a while. Does anyone using SX since probably SX2 seriously choose to load a DX version of any plugin that has VST options (which is all of them since god-knows when).

I can think of some good old DX plugins. DSPFX had a very nice reverb at the time, their enhancer was useful, their Eq was quite functional, and their flanger was weird on accoasion. But I wouldn't use DSPFX reverb now...it is squarely in the crap folder, compared to things like CSR and Princeton etc. The Eqs have been outdone for many a year. The enhancer? Why would I use that when I bought Spectralive for $30 or something ridiculously cheap (and I use it in preference to my old h/w now). Flanger? I can whip up anything with ten times the power in QFX2 and Ohmboyz even can outflange it by a long way.

Didn't TC Native used to be DX only? I'm pretty sure they went VST with later versions though. Only some real old warez of TC would be used by anyone for DX nowadays. And I would imagine that anyone that was seriously into TC enough that they kept up, would have bought the TC DSP cards by now.


I suspect our reaction is mostly knee-jerk. I know I didn't like it...but when I looked, even though it angered me...it doesn't affect me not one iota.

I agree that DX could be considered an outdated format.
It's the fact that Steiny consciously (or so it appears) made what is a quite fundamental change & didn't announce it.
As I said before - bad form.
One of the posters on the steiny forum was of the opinion they didn't announce it in case it negatively affected the number of users who automatically upgraded, cos' once you've upgraded you can holler all you want - they've got your money.
Dunno how much truth there could be in that.

DX is indeed a dying format. The sooner it goes the better...But its still a very low blow by steinberg. At least some sort of advance notice (say one major version ahead of time and or a year) would have been nice for thsoe that will now have to use a wrapper for the rare dx plugins they have.

That's pretty much how I'm feeling about it, Kritikon. I don't know how others work (and I guess there is the lot that's still using VST 5, holding out for a better Cubase), but I always freak out when a new version comes out, I get all worried that I'm not going to be able to open my old comps and the world will end. But you know what? It never does. Pretty much any old comp I load from 2001 is going to have things wrong/missing, from VSTi to audio files, and I always somehow make it. Hell, I've had comps from last week that are FUBAR. What are you gonna do?

And, since then, my workflow has changed so much that the old projects are irrelevant or need remixing anyway. So what if WaveHammer isn't there on my drum bus? Just insert Marquis Compressor and go (to a better place)! I used to use Kontakt for drums, now I got EZD, and my old projects sound like crap. Time to move on.

btw: TC Native was always VST, I believe; they released a buggy DX version that fell flat on its face.

Diverdee: good point. They stuck it so far down the list, it's suspicious, to say the least. But, at the end of the day, it's probably true that Cubase users just don't use DX plugs that much; not unless they had to. Remember how unstable they were in Nuendo 1.0, anyone?

My version of Trash is DX (Izotope came out with it before the vst version). I'm in the same position as the guys with Waves; I'll have to pay to get the vst version.
The only other stuff I have is from hyperprism that I haven't reinstalled yet, and having just looked, I think I've deleted the folder I had the serial numbers in...oh well.

As its been said, I really dont think this will effect to many people, but who knows, I know it won't effect me at all.. BUt thats saying I will update, and IM still on SX2 and have been perfectly happy working with that. I still have Cakewalk ProAudio 8 on my old computer which has now turned into the kids toy, and I could still use that if I had too, its still a good program in my book, as well as the old Cubase VST thats on there.

It seems like peeps want to jump on Steinberg again... Been there done that havent we, I seriously dont get the outcry by some people over something like this..

I don't know, I've lost the serial numbers so I can't install them right now (bought as a dl from ttoz; I deleted his msg with the serials)..reckon I never missed them anyway.
But 'Trash' is another matter!

It might be the right decision to go VST only, but Steinborg should have given it far more prominence.
