Can't you use EffectChainer as a wrapper?

Aren't there limitations with using wrappers? Something related to automation and such? I just thought I heard that somewhere.

Regardless of whether they should or should not have removed DX support, what IS true is that they should NOT have left that out of ALL of the promotion for the new version. That's shady business, and hardly an oversight. They took the time to remove all info on DX from the manual. They could have added, even as a footnote in the ads. But they didn't.

And for that, I can't see how anyone can defend the actions of Steinberg.

what on earth do they have to gain by getting rid of DX support?

There's enough computer power today to leave in a bit of code that allows DX plugins to be used, what is the reason for removing them? Why not just disscontinue the work on the DX part of the application so that people with the old plugins can have backwards compatibility?

If the DX part of the application had a detrimental effect on the rest of the program then fine, perhaps theres reason to take it out, but to just drop it with no warning is pathetic.

this really sucks. dx may be a dying format, but theres really nothing that justifies "killing" it on purpose. i mean, dx support was done via a wrapper anyway - why remove the functionality? you destroy backwards compability, and yes, theres quite some essential stuff thats still DX only or only works properly in DX (waves VST versions i.e. are not nearly as reliable as the DX originals, you cant use autotune VST for offline processing which is a bit ironic cause thats kinda the point of autotune, in a way...dave brown, timeworks, tc...not very smart to remove support for most of the sidechaining dynamics when sidechain functionality in VST isnt there yet).

i guess noone would have had a problem with steinberg letting DX support run out in the usual way, keeping it in the program while announcing that its officially no longer supported (think early SX versions and win 9x/ME). that would ease the transition, give developers the time to get their stuff together, and all would be fine.

the way it is now, it destroys backwards AND upwards compability, it makes autotune more or less unusable, it removes support for the reliable versions of all waves plugins, and it kills off several sidechaining dynamics, and there aint that many to start with. even considering that C4 is a rewrite in parts and they probably saved some budget by not carrying the DX wrapper over, that was not a very smart move. i like cubase/nuendo a lot and usually dont agree with the ever popular steinberg bashing, but this really sucks.

Why would Steiny say anything about not supporting DX anymore? It's not a new feature! It's an old feature that's been.. cleansed? ;)

No, but it's a major feature that was removed, and they had to know that it would affect some users. You don't remove a major feature from a paid upgrade, and don't say anything about it until after the fact. If you do, it's wrong.

No, it won't be a marketing strategy, but rather it will give your users a reason to trust you a bit more. Especially since the code was already there. They haven't even given ANY reason yet to their customers as to why it was removed.

Maybe they are not required to mention it. However, it sure is shady the way they handled it.

hey thanks for that! may come in handy!

Yeah, why would Steinberg announce it? They have an history of dropping support for stuff and discontinuing products (event relatively recent ones) w/o any notice...

Marvelous innovators. Great products. But from a users point of view, questionnable (to say the least) strategic decisions...

Sorry, forgot to put <sarcasm> in my post. :)

bluedad, you can also use FFx4, which is a free wrapper also. There is a larger version too that is a paid version. But the free version works just fine. Just a different amount of plugs that can be loaded per wrapper.

I don't have the address right now, but if you google it, it should come up.

Here's a Cakewalk comment on this issue.

I think what makes things worse is that even the moderators had no idea. They even denied that it was true before release.

Cakewalk, on the other hand, seems to handle their customers a TON better then Steinberg, and actually work with them in mind. If I were to ever leave Tracktion/EXT for any reason, I'd go to Sonar. I think it's worth every penny. I'm VERY happy with my setup now. But if that were to ever happen, Cakewalk would get my money.

So let me go against the grain then and actually say thank you to Steinberg for dropping that horrid old format. DirectX is a mess since it uses the registry to handle plugins meaning bits and pieces are still left once you uninstall things. Imagine running all your VST plugins as DX plugins and imagine running all freeware, demos and so on as DX with broken uninstalls and god knows what.

The funny thing is that even Sonar who's been the main supporter of DX is slowly dropping it. All new plugins are in vst-format and they've improved their VST support which makes DX obsolete.

Face it, people like to talk dirty about Steinberg. But how many of you really have a use for DX wrapper? I know I don't. I use Native Instruments and Wavearts stuff which both work excellent as vst's. I'm actually glad Steinberg made the decision since it's one less format to worry about.

And people ask why they did it? Cause it's a competitor to their own format, it's actually odd that they ever supported DX plugins.
