So, has anyone been able to get an sp1200/mpc/asr-10 type of sound out of retroband? I remember Kingston saying it would be possible back when the plugin was in development. I've been messing around with it but honestly I've never owned a sampler and lack the expertise to know how close I am to "that" sound. I do know that I want my drums to sound exactly like El-p's though. Thoughts?

I would try otiumFX sonitex for that type of effect on drums http://www.kvraudio.com/get/2268.html also try sd 2100 from aquit http://www.acquitrecords.com/4681.html and mda degrade

Actually,
what I said was that it is possible to create a vintage sampler style AD/DA circuit emulation using the the RetroBand algorithms. It's in development and it's very likely going to be my next plugin.
There's a lot of pressing issues before that can happen, like an OSX port of RetroBand, which is currently development. As a bonus of the mac port even the Windows version will get fully 64-bit internal processing. I've got it already working (no VSTGUI yet) and it sounds quite awesome to be honest.

Kinston, anychance you could make a load of impulses from hardware samplers and use them in your product to get that "D/A" sound, they would be very small so whouldn't take up too much cpu.

This question comes up a lot, and here's my problem with it. I like the sound of old records from the days of 8 bit drum machines and 12 bit samplers, but records then were being recorded to tape in professional studios with experienced engineers and lots of outboard analog effects. So is the character that you think you're hearing coming from the sampler's DAC, or from the whole process? And considering all that how is something like Trasher, or any other bit crusher used sparingly not close enough? I just can't see how it can be more than a tiny piece of the puzzle.Blind Bo Diddley Johnson wrote:So, has anyone been able to get an sp1200/mpc/asr-10 type of sound out of retroband? no not yet. but I've got a GUIless crossplatform version going on already that should pretty much already build on any platform. It'll take a good while still to get the VSTGUI happening though so I can't set any dates.polyslax wrote:Any ETA on that?

I hate impulses unfortunately. I don't like their static sound and it's not at all the right approach to start emulating oldschool AD/DA. I'll do something completely different.Spaceman Sounds wrote:Kinston, anychance you could make a load of impulses from hardware samplers and use them in your product to get that "D/A" sound, they would be very small so whouldn't take up too much cpu.

Just checked out retroband trial again and i see what you mean about the impulse being static. I was trying color tone and it sounded good but retro band seems to be interacting with the sound. Im going to have to pick this one up when I get the funds thanks

Michael, if you can emulate the 12-bit converters on the old Yamaha TX-16W sampler, you'll be my hero.

Which is actually one of the main ideas behind Sonitex STX-1260. Too provide a sound that is inspired by the many steps a piece of sample goes through before it ends up as a punchy snare (or whatever) on a modern track.nixnutz wrote:This question comes up a lot, and here's my problem with it. So perhaps the better solution would be a combination of both tools: to use RetroBand to simulate saturation from the analog studio gear, and then use Sonitex afterwards to add retro flavour by simulating that studio mix going to vinyl and being sampled on vibey samplers.

Can you tell how close you are to sounding good? In my experience, that (and then knowing what to do about it) is more useful...Blind Bo Diddley Johnson wrote:So, has anyone been able to get an sp1200/mpc/asr-10 type of sound out of retroband? It's a rave, Lewis!

I think the old AD/DA stages and the samplers way of interpolating samples and their general audio engine is a rather subtle effect for most people here on KvR. It's not a "magic bullet" of any kind that it seems like some people think it is.
Cheers!
