i've looked forward to this day for a long time. the new features are really good. i haven't had a chance to dig into it extensively, but i was able to use some of the new features (just to try them out quickly) with ease. i'd reccommend it

This will be my first wait in terms of upgrading. I'm going to see what EXT2 holds first.
I do like the new instruments/effects rack they have.
One thing that i still don't get is why they wont allow automation to be recorded to clips by messing with paramaters directly from the gui? The whole envelopes thing is time consuming and doesn't go with the flow of Live.
Anyhow...i'm waiting.

Judging by the Live 5 bugs, I'll buy Live 6 in the grace period that will allow a free upgrade to Live 7.

That'll probably be next August...

HI

I almost forgot how sweet life could be without the dreaded unlock code thing ...

So I load Live and Operator on my Internet pc - then start to repeat the laborious process on my DAW, which is not online and involves putting in a serial to get Live to run in Demo mode, then you have to get an unlock code ... burn it to a CD or whatever ... go to the Ableton site ... put that and your serial in ... get an unlock code .... burn that to a cd ... get preferences up ... load the unlock code in ... then repeat the WHOLE process again to unlock OPERATOR ... then I get "you have exceeded your unlock allowance" - whilst trying to sort Operator out.

PHEW!!!

I hate to say it but I prefer Cubase dongle to C/R. (until it breaks that is). I'd love to reformat my laptop and my desktop but need to ask for unlock codes beforehand (damn, I'm almost 30, it's like asking my dad if I'm allowed to go out), and if I'm not happy with the reinstall, well...I'll be suspicious.

it's just not fair.

USB stick would make your life easier

i've also had many nightmares with c/r from a few companies. ableton has a decent system though. the work around for someone who likes to reformat occassionally is as follows (this is a known issue talked about on the ableton forums, so i'm sure it's okay to post here

):

this is for windows, but there is also a similar method for mac...

1. you can image a fresh install of your OS with ghost (commercial) or drive image xml (free)
2. install live and authorize
3. goto C:\Documents and Settings\(YOUR USER NAME)\Application Data\Ableton\Live\Unlock
*this is hidden by default, so you need to unhide all folders
4. copy "unlock.cfg" and make a backup

you can always reinstall this authorization on the same computer with the same OS image. i really like drive image xml as a free alternative to ghost. i've been backing up my OS and files regularly with it for 6 months with zero problems. good luck.

Me too on all those things.
A work around for recording parameters is to record to teh arramnge view and then drag the clip to the session view.

I'm thoroughly dissapointed in this update. The main thing I need a host for, sequencing and mixing, and I'm sure most people here it's the same deal. Live has VST support, I don't need some subpar effects added. Added video support is cool, but definetely not enough to justify a whole step upgrade. The effects rack, really nice feature but, we're working our way towards and update. But what we really need for an update is an update to why everyone uses the program. Sequencing mainly. Companies just don't seem to regard midi editing anymore, they make a simple midi editor and thats it from the birth of the program.. no new inovations ever. Give us record envelope changes to each loop, give us better envelope editing (it's terrible in live), give us multiple automation lanes in one lane. Give us grooves instead of standard shuffle etc etc etc. I'd really like to see customizable midi editing capabilities. I'd like to be able to set the editor to a scale, etc etc. And I know I'm not the only one asking for these kinds of things, but no, no company really ever listens.

I guess the fact is if the say hey check out this update, more advanced midi editing, it might gain a few new users and make the current users really happy, but it's that profitable. When they say, hey you can edit video with it now, that's a whole new slew of people.

"OOH! New file browsing capabilities! I'll buy the update!
Screw, I'll buy five!"

I'm not getting 6. I'm gonna wait for Ext2 to come out, and if the midi editing and arranging in that doesn't satisfy me then I'm just gonna Reason. While Propellerheads are bad about this kind of stuff too, they're at least more realistic about it and don't try to add tons of new subpar features to expand user base. They at least add features that will be convienent for what the program was originally made to do. It is an -update- after all.

Live has so much promise too, it's just the arranging and midi editing are so bad that I just find myself looping stuff over and over. Reason fits my workflow better from what I've used of it.

Sorry, I know this might not seem like a constructive post, but I'm posting it for those who were also hoping that they would update more. The update is really just what the claim on the website, just added new features, no real improvements to any existing thing.

Yes, 6 doesn't appear to offer me what I wanted either. Live 5 does virtually everything I want from it apart from a few small things - all of which have been left off this update. That is:

Better midi editing

Merge audio and midi clips in the same track.

Better support of midi plugins

I may well update though, since it is fairly cheap. But I'm not going to do it yet, the bugs seem to be piling up on the forum. I'll probably chip when it gets to 6.1 or something.

ableton live started in good direction - live act tool.
now it starts to compete with daws - and looks more and more like a cubase clone.
too bad ...

and the price for every update method is really nasty.

It's suppose to be a live performance tool has oppose to a sequencer like you say it is. That's the way I use it anyhow. I'm quite happy with the new features even though some features you mentioned are missing. I know they will come eventually.

Why not go the cubase, sonar route? They have some quite advance midi features.

john vulich: i used "cubase" as a metaphor for a music production studio - as oposed to a live act tool.

Live 6.0.1 is OUT!
