Well, I think it still worlds away from Cubase but I guess that it's all subjective.

Robert Henke already confirmed that Ableton are working on significant improvements to the MIDI editing and Arrangement View. They may well be ready in time to be the headline feature improvements for Live 7.

Ableton are a fairly small company and have added some impressive new features in Live 6. There will be even more in Live 7, Live 8, Live 9, etc.

I will upgrade, but I'm not in a mad rush to do it. I've not yet even decided whether to get the box (with EIC) or just the download (more likely).

My upgrade record to date:

Live 2 - first version I bought. Thought it was fun, but hardly essential.

Live 3 - skipped update. Barely even took an interest in it.

Live 4 - waited four months then took the plunge. Instantly hooked... but had serious CPU issues with it.

Live 5 - took part in the beta testing. Loved the update and bought it boxed literally the moment it was released. Well, within half an hour, anyway!

Live 6 - see above. I took part in the beta test over the past couple of months. Unlike Live 5 this is not for me such an instant *need*, hence the lack of haste. But I do think it is worth at least the download fee, and will do it soon.

Regarding bugs, Ableton's public beta testing policy should prevent all these problems, but unfortunately they never run it for long enough to be truly effective. By way of comparisson, the Reason 3 public beta ran for several months (4 or 5, I think).

By the way, I'm sorry to disappoint all those who thought I was the archetype Ableton fanboy

I am a Live addict - I can't justify buying anything else since I don't have the cash. I did get the Mac Binary upgrade this summer so the current upgrade will only set me back another $60.

All the criticism in this thread is sad. When I moved from FL to Live it was a revelation - it has a unique workflow and it is a fantastic tool. I *never* play live anymore so that has not been an issue for me, but as a scratchpad/arranger/mix application it really works well for me.

While the MIDI editing may not be top notch I find it quite easy to work with and there are a lot of functionality so for most people it should suffice...

Comparing it to Cubase or Reason is probably fun but it's like with cars - different brands, different features. They all offer you the possibility to drive, but the dashboards and feature sets are different.

Live is the middle finger in my right hand. if they added a slicer I wouldn't even need to upgrade anymore after this.

Apparently there was rex file compatibility in one of the v6 alphas but they removed it until the could work out some issues that they were having with it.

If I'm not mistaken doesn't ReCycle have an option to save in SF2 format with a separate MIDI file? If that is the case, then you could import the SF2 into the new sampler and trigger the loop using the imported MIDI file.

Question: how do the racks in Live 6 compare to Phrazor? Seems like they're very similar?

This might be old news, but it was new to me. The upgrade from Live 5 to the Intel Mac 5.2 version of Live is now free.

That's good. I wonder why they bothered to make it a paid update in the first round - but at least I get a full discount for it when I upgrade to v6.

I am happy with the dual cpu support - I really needed this!

I am pretty unhappy with the midi editing being untouched.

I thought Cakewalk got it right with Project 5 V2: simply put a little button that allows the piano-roll to undock - hey presto; you also have passable dual monitor support thrown in as well.

Tracktion could do with similar treatment.

Midi editing is so important to many people, users need a good sized view that can be accessed easily and preferably be placed where they need it.

But it's getting there!

The core duo support is my only need for the upgrade. I'll have to see if that is worth the price.

I really don't need both

That said, Audition is an essential element in my setup, and I do sometimes use it for multitrack as well as sample editing and mastering duties. Sibelius is crucial to me too. So I'm not saying that Live is completely capable of absolutely every musical task - that would be just silly.

I figure a host should be pretty usable without the need to throw another host inside it!
