Gear Box (line 6)

I check the line 6 monkey, but still no more updates...wasn't it suppose to be a vst? Second I just discovered if you go with no cabinet and select the mic positioning, instead of a cab you get a shadow of a mic stand, cement wall, a piece of wood and curtains you can open and close for reflections

I think I remember some mention of it being a free upgrade for xt or someting like that...either way I'm still interested...Lunch Money wrote:Right. Not VST yet. Also, plug-in version is a paid upgrade-- not sure if you knew that or not, but it seems worth mentioning.

I don't think it's a free upgrade for any of the Line6 platforms. It's being marketed as a more or less separate product. It uses Line6 hardware as a "dongle," or as an interface if you so choose, but is still being sold separately.
I'm also interested anyhow. I like plug-ins. Though, there's something to be said for just rendering or whatnot. I had an edit recently that I was trying to rework, and I didn't have any of the plug-ins installed anymore. BUT... since it was part of a collab I was doing, I had the tracks available as renders in a different edit. Worked with the rendered audio instead, which was less flexible but ultimately meant less "tracking" in terms of which plug-ins to keep installed. Going forward I'm going to render all of my projects in case it comes up again.
Er, point being, though... I'm interested. I hope it's not as expensive for upgraders as it will be for standalone purchasers.

Teh free upgrade part was the gearbox 2.0 upgrade. The gearbox plugin is based on the gearbox but not free.

Can I ask... is the Toneport UX1 (and 2 I guess) just an audio interface come dongle, or does it actually process the Gearbox plugins?
IE: Does it perform the DSP calculations on the CPU of the computer or on the hardware box that you get?

TonePort UX1, UX2, the forthcoming KB37, and the TonePort DI (which will be sold as a DI/Dongle for the plug-in version) are all entirely dumb and have the CPU do all the processing.
However, it's no more CPU intensive than, say, GR2 or AT2, and features "ToneDirect monitoring" which may be a clever marketing term, but actually works GREAT and allows effected monitoring at near-zero-latency levels (I'd say less than 2 ms, but I've never actually tried) while allowing you to keep your ASIO buffer high in order to avoid pops and crackles.
