Agreed. I use FL; I just tried the Live6 demo and didn't like it at all, especially the MIDI-editing part. I fiddled around with it for 3 hours; but gave up eventually. FL's MIDI editing is so much more easier.

Now talk about purpose, Video matching is a -live- feature? Right. I can see it now, I'll load up some crappy youtube clip and work on matching it up while the same old loop continues over and over and over with the same crap ass envelope being applied to the filter. It'll be the best show in town.

I rewire to reason, and I think LIVE lacks a way to easily send knob controls to reason throught the live recorder. I have to draw the midi volume instead of use the knob controls on my Oxygen controller.

Live also isn't that eaily organized when I want to move "just the midi beats over, vs moving the alc drum items over". Sometimes I just want to see what a set of beats looks like over a different set of alc units. And sometimes I may want to rewire those beats to reason, and that is where it gets nuggly.

Live wants to take the place of reason seemingly with sampler, and operator. Reason does those things just as well if not better than live does. Its really kinda annoying, and its like working with crippleware.

As much as I love the idea and the workings of Live, LIVE 6 hasn't made things much better.

Anyway, maybe I was just too tired last night to figure anything out.

There is no CPU improvement - a host doesn't really use much CPU, does it.

It is the plug-ins that use the (majority of) CPU, and Live can't really improve how the plug-ins use CPU (in any big way).

The improvement is for people with dual CPU/core that simply want to run more plug-ins.

Well I'm very dissapointed with live 6 but on the other hand I'm also happy because it means I will be saving the price of an uprade from live 5 to live 6 and the price of sampler which is rediculously expensive for what it is anyway. Roll on Live 10, maybe I will be interested by then. I think the difference between Live 4 & 5 made it worth upgrading from 4 to 5, but from 5 to 6, do me a favour, utter Bollox, waste of hard earned cash if you ask me. Ableton should start listening more to what there customers actually want.

cpu-wise, I am doing things with Live 6 I could only dream of doing with Live 5. The dual cpu support is worth the upgrade price alone. (assuming you have a dual cpu machine)

Also, the new racks are the best thing I have seen on any host. So powerful, so easy to use and save. So easy to make a preset using any 3rd party VST's and effects. Want to layer Zebra and Albino in one preset? So easy to do and to reuse. Want to split the keyboard with different synths or drums? Easy to do and each can have its own effects chain, or even multiple chains switchable by key velocity or realtime controller. The racks have amazing realtime performance ability. Add in the rack macro controls and automapping, and Live is an unbeatable performance instrument.

Anyone who plays music in realtime, whether on stage of studio, will be happy with this upgrade.

There sure seem to be a bunch of grumblers. I have been having a blast with Live 6. I could not imagine going back to 5. Ableton did a great job on the feature selection, but then again they added all things I wanted.

I have no use for the EIC or Sampler which I did not buy after the beta ran out. But the Live 6 upgrade itself? It kicks butt.

The video matching is very explicitly not a live feature. It's intended for people who are doing soundtrack type work for existing videos, and I think it doesn't work in session view right now (also, no export). They've hinted they'll expand this functionality in the future, but its really not one of the major parts of the update in terms of development time, probably, or for most users. Those are racks, multi-core support, better freeze/flatten.

Ableton said adding video display was one of the most requested features. I do video work so am quite pleased about it, but for someone who does not work on video, it is a non feature.

However, there is a side benefit from adding video support! Being able to designate a master track! and use that for timing control... great if you have a recorded part with a nice feel and loosely played timing wise and want to play other clips in time with it.

Live 6.0.1 is OUT!
