DX-7 / TX-81Z emulation

Hi,

Maybe I'm not your "normal" user: I can even remember when John Chowning wrote his paper about a new type of synthesis later patented by Yamaha and put to commercial success on their FM synth models... ages ago! So my suggestions reflect my interest in FM programming in general and linking a new product (Rhino) to something I have experience with (Yamaha FM synths programming):

1- I know that someone suggested a DX-7 patch import function. But I also would like to have a written tutorial about how to immitate DX-7 patches with Rhino (corresponding envelope shape and values for rates and levels, modulation index equivalence with the 0-99 DX-7 range, etc).

2- While on the subject of old synths: an emulation of 4-OP FM Yamaha synths would also be very nice IMHO (e.g. TX-81Z). Maybe we could have a set of waveshaping functions to produce the 4-OP waveforms or else a set of 4-OP wav files to import (less CPU intensive, I think). And add a written tutorial on that also!

3- I bought Rhino because of what if offers beyond traditional Yamaha FM style synthesis. I would like only to have some bridges from here to there. Or maybe because old men need bridges...

Keep up the good work. Rhino is great!

boin

You should check out FM7.

I have it. But I think that Rhino offers more (for much less $$)

boin,

There is a dx7 sysex import function in Rhino, but it's only available to beta testers at the moment, because it's nowhere near a perfect emulation. I'll try to cook up a tutorial with some table equivalents, though.

Thanks for the nice comments,

FM7 already has TX81Z file import as well as DX7-DX100 DX200 V50M etc etc etc.If you already have FM7 is makes no sense not to use it for these functions.I agree that Rhino is an awesome synth capable of great sounds although it's too cpu hungry to use on my present system. It's one of the first synths on my list when I upgrade my cpu.Sorry Big Tick he did ask for 81Z import and the FM7 is his best solution at this point in time.

Does anyone know where there are any free patches for any of these synths (BESIDES THE DX7)?

No problem here's a link for You with TX81Z (and not only) patches

http://burp.nl/dx/patches/patches.htm (http://burp.nl/dx/patches/patches.htm)

I have this module at home nice thing, but... I don't use it

Thanks guys!

Hi Boin,

there's a picture of the harmonic contents of every TX81z wavefom inlcuding levels in the TX81z manual, since the waveforms use only a few harmonics it shouldn't be a problem to recreate them...

You can get the a PDF Version of the manual at...

A formant is a preferred resonating frequency of any acoustical system.

Summa, thanks for the link. I'll include these waveforms with the new additive generator I'm working on for the next Rhino release.

Thank you, guys, I'm glad that the subject has some interest.

Just to make it clear: I didn't ask about a TX/DX patch *import* function for Rhino. That is not my point since FM-7 and FMHeaven (to some extent) can do this. Besides that I still have my old 6-OP and 4-OP FM synths (DX-7 and V50) to program and play ;)

What I think that could be useful is a guide/tutorial on how to *emulate* these classic FM synths with Rhino - waveforms, levels, modulation indexes (spl?), envelopes, etc.

Thanks again,

Boin

OK, I see. I'll try to come up with something once I've completed this damn 1.07 release.
