Just curious if any Fruity Loops users exist that also know how to play a musical instrument

With over 100,000 users, what do you think?

(and no a turntable doesn't count - or at least I've never heard of a beatmatching/scratching school). Every time I've tried the latest version of FL it feels like a toy, but I know lots of people like it. I do have one friend that uses it to generate little beats to import into Nuendo but that's about the only musician (as in, someone that can play at least one instrument) I know that uses FL.

Just curious what peoples' use for FL is because I can't imagine writing a whole song in it unless its for a video game.

IF you want to record *real* instrument playing, FLS is not the best way to go. Most I know use it to accompany their live playing. It is what it is -- a tool. You can use it for what it does or not -- like most VST hosts.

Why don't you try listening to lots of music here by those who use it? Like this one -- everything you hear in this song except the vocals was done in FLS.

the betas feature a nice new toolbar button that when clicked run the 'record audio now' one-shot macro. it's a small feature but it's a nice one

fl can record with the best of em...but yea it's not it's strong point. though i think the betas are much stronger -- edison rules.

what fl lacks for audio and performance recording is stuff like punch-in/out recording, loop recording with takes, etc. that's it though, it can do everything else.

i find a good balance to use t2 for audio tracking and insert fl as a vsti..

I got to get around to trying the beta -- I'm scared franky, but only because I have so much work going on (previous unsettling experience upgrading to v5.0). But after hearing about the new 'Edison' and so on, I may change me modus operandi -- It would be great to just 'do it all' in FLS, for sure.

But whennever I've imported my audio to FLS, it's a major pain to start from, say, Bar 11, because the audio file won't then play. You have to go back to the beginning. Whereas in AA, you can start from anywhere.

But maybe I am kinda dumb and don't do it right

sorta; they are tied/related to the audioclip channels. they arent audio tracks with arm|mute|solo stuff like traditional seqs.

I just slapped two different wave in FL's playlist, clicked song mode and started from the middle on each (by muting one then the other) and together

I write DnB, chiptunes, Hip Hop, Ambient, and trance in FL Studio. it's a very good songwriting and production tool. It's what you put into it.

Started out avant jazz lead/solo type, mostly sax, refuse to own any but the lightest, almost toy instruments now in favor of just PC scoring/performing with various weird methods (mostly voice-based).

But I do indeed rock the f**k out of a Jew's harp, expecially in the Tuvan throatsinging style in Arabic melismatics.

Only PC seq hosts (in my case FL) allows one to reach for any sound or instrument or number of sounds at once and instantly score/record it whenever it strikes you. For instance, you don't ahve to make the money an ad jingle writer makes to buy an orchestra's time to play your composition, or string 45 fx boxes all together into one studio which would be necessary to make one of my FL songs.
