I know drawing the sliding note in the FL piano roll does nothing for external VSTi, but couldn't gol program it to enable slide support? Maybe give the sliding note some sort of special properties (sliding tension curve (linear, parabolic, etc.), etc.) by which it could modulate the pitch knob of that VSTi? The sliding duration would obviously depend on the length of the slider note, and the sliding pitch extent would depend on its position relative to the master note, just like regular slides in FL.

If he could make the sliding note parameters independent for each instance, it would rock my world!

I ask this because it's a real fsking PITA (for me) to draw custom automation for the pitch knob and even when I do that, I almost never achieve decent results (I don't have a MIDI-keyboard). Am I alone here?

Maybe even the volume and panning knobs could be modulated this way; the individual note velocities/panning values don't work for VST instruments. I know this is a VSTi-standard limitation.

ah OK then, I'll chalk this up on my 'idiotic threads when NOT drunk' list.

So seriously gol, is pitch-modulation (and volume/panning knob modulation) for VSTi based on native-FL slides (and other data) possible? Maybe in FL8? Or 9? Puhleeze reply, even a short answer will do.

I'd ask on the dsp forum whether it's possible to add support for FL's pitch bend data to a VST plug.

I am no programmer, but I think this would work best if it is a host-side feature... therefore it will be independent of all VSTi (in FL).

as they won't do anymore fl plugins in native format slide will be only able through fl soundfont player ,directwave fl sampler and of course with all existing fl generators

Thanks for the replies. I don't think I explained myself properly, so... here is a picture!

Hope it clears things up. Obviously, I don't want the knobs to show any animation because that would be strange...

I think this would be a great idea... other hosts may (will?!) try to copy this! C'mon gol, be a pioneer!

C'mon dude, at least say whether this is a feasible concept for a future version of FL!

Isn't there a way to have slides using MIDI plugins? Soma made notefx-lite which allows pitch bending with a joystick. I tried it out briefly but it crashed FL. It did seem to get the job done though. Try it for 3rd party VSTi...

well you could just automate the pitch settings - which is fiddly, but it works. It would be nice if slides were possible with any VSTi though using the piano roll tools

I love the precision and ease-of-use of FL's slides in the piano roll that I've sampled my VSTis sometimes just to use the slides on them. And anyone who's heard my songs knows that my favorite bass player is BooBass with slides.

when you use a slide (i feel stupid asking this question being an FL user for so long -- i just never really use the internal generators too much) -- can you bend one note whilst the other remain unbent? Sort of like a pedal steel effect?

Yeah, just use different note colors.
I think that's what they were originally for, if I recall the notes from several versions ago, before they kicked out separate midi channel data.

Plus, you can mix and match different bend-block lengths to make vibrato or whatever.

thats cool - but i really dont use the flsynths too much for that type of effect... I would do it on guitar obviously..

In my town, the degrees of recursive ripping-off go back much more than 3 levels, JBM. I can think of a band that's copying a local band that's copying the local band Malachi Constant, friends of mine that self-consciously wanted to make a Tortoise-like band, a band that 2 of them knew from back in Chicago where they're from. Who knows who Tortoise is ripping off? Reich?

Slides for FL generators are more powerful than simple pitch-bends (basically, they're per-voice slides, and not just for pitch), so that wouldn't apply to VSTi's.

VST's were made around MIDI, the good thing is its high compatibility, the bad thing is that it's an over 20 years old limited protocol.
