Hi,
I have recorded some very old cassettes of my band on the PC...
problem:
one of the stereo channel is clear, while the other is quite muddy and dull...
possible solution? recommend me some VST that could do the trick of "re-balamncing" the stereo field...

Maybe you'll be more lucky to find an application that would do the trick rather than a real-time plug-in

first take a look at your tape deck head.......its strange that only one side are f**k top !
Hope its only a playback head and not the record head !
If its the recording head you be stock with this f**k top side ! Maybe you can fix it with EQ and/or restoration plug...go figure out !

Your best bet is indeed to get the heads aligned for proper azimuth of the cassette tape deck, because that's the cause why it sounds this way. It's a troublesome journey to restore what's not there anymore. BUT: on tape it's probably still there! Only the deck doesn't play it.
One big drawback: once you start adjusting the heads there's no end to it. You also have the option to leave the cassette sound like it should be: in such a shape that we wonder how we ever accepted a sound like that in the previous century. A 16bit 44kHz / 24bit 96kHz debate is futile compared to that.

I think you sused it.
Try playing the cassette in another player and see if it's the same, if not then it's the head alignment allright.
Also, if you can, record an 8khz sine to tape on a decent machine and use that, it's the calibration tone normally used to align tape heads.
Tip, make half turn increments only with a small crosspoint screwdriver when adjusting and remember which way you went.
It's easy to get lost otherwise.
If you are going to transfer tapes to cd, and if the tape was recorded with dolby, try recording with the dolby turned off. The high frequencies will be boosted and there will be more tape hiss (no dolby). I found it better when using noise reduction and capturing a noise print.
