If this takes off you'll go down in computer history as the pioneer of gpu audio FX. That's got to be an accolade worth having. :D

I don't know what I'm talking about, but why not just double up the processing, to get 32-bit (probably doesn't work that way, I thought I'd just suggest it). It might take twice the processing power, but it's a GPU, which isn't really being used for anything during audio anyway.

Works in Sonar 5 latest version Geforce FX 5200 btw.

Im not sure to catch the point from the Voxengo guy. Is he saying that with gpu is not possible have the same level of quality plugins than with normal CPUs? If that's the point, is interesting to take in count.

that's just Aleksey's normal way of putting down what he considers being competition - he's very good at that - always appears harmless and acts the innocent man - actually it's a big compliment from him when he posts in a thread which isn't about his own plugins... :hihi:

Who is "the Voxengo guy"? EDIT: Wow, didn't know that he is the man behind all those lovely plugins :)

Usually, all processing is done in 32bit, every host is processing in 32bit and because a video card processes in 32bit as well, there is no problem at all and no quality loss.

He means the following: Some algorithms are so complex, that, because there are so many multiplications/subtractions made for every value, the usual 32bit become distored, which results in noise in the output. And because of that it is better to convert the incoming 32bit signal to 64bit, compute, and then convert back to 32bit before sending the output back to the host. This way, the noise should be minimized.

But this has nothing to do with the fact that a video card is able to do full 32bit processing without any quality loss.

Works perfectly fine on GeForce FX5200 128MB here (had to install DX 9.0c).

Just played briefly: works OK in Nuendo 3.2, WaveLab 5, EnergyXT. I got 8 mono instances @ 96K/32-bit and more than 16 @ 44.1K/32-bit.

For a 5200 this is very good.

But note that the plug isn't able to do mono processing, so you can even use it on stereo channels which should result in the same performance

No, this time it's not a competition. Just pointing out obvious bottlenecks, including those discovered by myself doing *the same kind* of development.

In either case, this is going to be a mainstream for the coming years. 'audio on GPU'.

Even ATI is planning to release (or extend their graphics cards) GPU products that allow to perform 'stream processing'.

Personally, I'm still 'work in the box' minded, because it is the most convenient, most stable (given software is designed and coded correctly) and most affordable way for most computer applications.

I won't mind releasing a couple of GPU-powered plug-ins after some program like 'gpuhost' I was mentioning gets released. But I think by the time we get some really good 'stream processing' hardware, we'll be using 8-core processors already.

Being 'on the edge' is a nice thing, but it does not last for long. :) The keen feeling fades away while problems remain. :)

Hey... The Beatles didn't have the best equipment ever... and they made amazing music... I would use GPU plugins even if they weren't as good as other VSTi's IF they gave me the result I wanted.

I have no problem to throw all my code into the trash can if someone comes up with a better solution. This is also no competition for me, I have fun coding, made my hobby to my occupation, privately making music and trying to put the best of both worlds together to create something useful for all people. If someone else brings me effects that run on my gpu, I'll stop coding and start making music :D
