Actually all those 'chicks' that they hire to introduce each and every new tutorial snippet are HELLA ANNOYING. I'm not talking one intro for the whole DVD - I'm saying if there are 48 videos in a DVD then there are 48 f*cking intro's by that girl. I wish there was a preference option to just skip straight to the tutorial vid because they contribute nothing and many people have flamed askvideo about those intros.

i.e. you just clicked the tutorial for 'song cycle repeat mode' and even though you know what tutorial you're bringing up, and there's the complete list of them on the left side of the interface that's ALWAYS UP even through the tutorials, still the girl has to come up and say "Song Cycle Repeat Mode - in this tutorial we'll learn about Song Cycle Repeat Mode, so let's hang on to our hats, buckle up and get this party started!"

lovin logic 7... made the switch from sx3 on a pc over a year ago (i had been using cubase since 3.0 and then vst3.5/3.6...) can't wait for version 8... i have no idea what else they could do other than include more plugins and fix a few bugs?

Hah trust me dude there's no burning desire to see the askvideo chicks naked - I actually rather they kept their clothes ON. They are all plain-jane's that were probably happy to get out of working at the grocery store for a while to make extra money recording intro's. Some of them are on the dumpy side.

From what's been mentioned elsewhere the whole time stretching algorithm and workflow has gotten an overhaul, where it will auto-snap audio (aka fit to time) similar to the way Sonar 6 does it now, in that you can just set a track to auto-snap any audio data placed on it, rather than having to "apply" time-stretching to a piece of audio after its placed on a track line.

This is one of the biggest gripes among Logic peeps, especially with just about every other DAW having caught up with the audio-snapping feature (Cubase SX3/SX4, Sonar6, ofcourse Ableton Live, ACID, Digital Performer, etc. etc.)

To hell with Apple loops. NOBODY likes having to convert their audio to apple loops prior to being able to easily fit the audio to time - not condusive to an efficient workflow!

I've long thought that ACID + Logic would equal the perfect DAW (for me). Ofcourse now ACID's time-stretching algorithms are outdated compared to some newer offerings elsewhere, but its always had an excellent workflow.

As for Logic 8 that is dropping soon, EMapple has the logic v8 beta testers under signed NDA's so they can't discuss features, but they claim the new v8 features will 'make everyone $hit their pants' according to a few of the beta testers.

That's what people on LUG (the mailing list) have eluded to - I take it with a grain of salt though but having been a former Logic beta tester myself in the 5.x PC days, I know some of the people and they've been on the beta group forever and generally haven't blown hot air when they've started pre-release chatter.

Who knows but right now 7.2.3 is working great.

Yeah.....I keep figuring out all the "little" things. I'd love to get those vid's but what's the deal with this annoying chick?

hey, I am currently a Cubase user too and have always been thinking about making the switch. If it's ok, may I ask some little questions here ? As you guys mentioned, I notice that Logic does not get discussed here at all which is a huge shame since it is what a lot professionals use.

My little questions re logic are...

1) How do you fade in / out an audio clip using the mouse ? In Cubase you just click and drag on the edge of the waveform but I can't seem to find this in Logic
2) How do you adjust the slope of fade in / out.
3) What advantages / disadvantages do you find with Cubase SX3 / 4 vs Logic ?
4) Does AU provide any advantage over VST ?
5) How stable is the audio engine of logic with huge projects ? In my tests I found it extremely solid and smooth compared to the Cubase engine.

I had tried the Logic Express demo on a iMac we have a work once and these are the only two things that confused me. I think the Environment is seriously cool ! Being a programmer, I feel like I have full control in my sequencer and very good visibility of exactly what's going down.

I dunno about Acid loops - I haven't used Live enough - you'd have to check Ableton's site. I would assume it would.

ACID 2.0 and Logic Express 7's my current range, along with Sound Forge (5 ofcourse, others don't work with ACID 2.0) and some loose others, not worth mentioning.

anyhoo, the main thing at the moment that annoys the hell out of me is the lack of VST support. ofcourse, FXpansion's got the wrapper, but that's far too expensive, and i can't find a demo version or anything alike. furthermore, there isn't any other VST to AU conversion program, is there? so that's the main drawback i currently have when it comes to Logic.

hmm, if anyone has any ideas, i'd love to hear about it.

Click on the block at the left end of track; there is a buttony looking thing that will allow you to display any automation parameter. Choose volume and just set automation points.

Click on the local View menu, and make sure the "Track Automation" is ticked.
Then, on your Track, on the left where it says "Audio 1" or "Inst 1" or whatever you've named it, click on the box with the arrows on the side, and go down and select Volume. (Or, you can automate Pan, or anything else this way).

This will create a yellow horizontal line over the track; you can click on this line to create a point, and you can then drag any point higher or lower (greater or less volume).

2) How do you adjust the slope of fade in / out.

Select the Automation Tool (like the arrow tool only with a wiggly end). With this tool, click on your fade out and drag upwards or downwards to create different shaped curves.

3) What advantages / disadvantages do you find with Cubase SX3 / 4 vs Logic ?

I wouldn't know, I'm not familiar with Cubase.

4) Does AU provide any advantage over VST ?

AFAIK, AU doesn't have any advantage or disadvantage over VST (or DX or whatever), it's just a different format.

5) How stable is the audio engine of logic with huge projects ? In my tests I found it extremely solid and smooth compared to the Cubase engine.

Logic is always very stable for me. I've managed to do complex songs with a variety of reverbs, and everything works fine.

Thanks folks. I was also reading the Logic manual which is available free from the Apple site and found that you can use the Crossfade tool to also do fade ins. I love a few features in Logic, like the Tempo Track in the Arrange Window and the Endless Loop of any part.

Stability is where I find Cubase lacking, it works well on some systems and terribly on others. I think Logic is much more consistent in it's stability.

In my recent move to Logic, the biggest problem I have with Logic is that Logic is drop out prone, something that never happens with Cubase, even if I run it under Rosetta on my mac. Otherwise, Logic has a lot of cool things going for it. Cool instruments and FX, beautiful interface and I can get a good workflow going because I have easier access to things in Logic. There are still many things I miss from Cubase so I still use Cubase with Windows. I don't plan to upgrade SX 3 to C4 though. All the negative publicity surrounding the C4 release just turned me against it. I'm gonna stick with Logic 7 for the most part and possibly upgrade it to 8 if the featureset looks promising.

whoa what are you all on about? Fades are easily done on an audio region using the region parameter box in the top left of the arrange window. You can select the length and curve for the fade-in and fade-out separately. For crossfades, you can select the type of curve that you want in the region parameters box as well(X, Equal power, etc) or you can use the crossfade tool.

As far as the advantages of AU, the main one in my mind is that AU parameters can display actual units for automation.... for example, if you want to automate the cutoff of a filter, the cutoff will be displayed in Hz(provided its coded to do so). Other advantages have to do with i/o stuff(like not needing separate versions for m-m, m-s, s-s).

But the most significant difference, IMO, is the ability to sidechain. I think the new VST protocool allows it too, but i'm not 100% sure...
