Have a couple of questions about Cakewalk Pro Audio 9, an antiquated program, yet the one that I am studying with in an elective for beginners musical theory:

Is there a way to export a project file into an MP3?? I see the "Save-As" context menu gives me an option to save as MIDI, but then, if you save as MIDI, it saves all the channels. I'd like to save certain channels as MIDI or WAV files, or even the whole project as a WAV/MP3/WMA.

Thanks,

Darryl

1st, you'd have to have either purchased an mp3 encoder from Cakewalk, or a 3rd party, or have one of the special versions of PA9 that included the mp3 encoder to Export in mp3 format. Also, you'd have to create an audio file for every MIDI track in your project before trying to Export as an mp3 file. It's been a long time since I've used PA9, so , you'll probably get better answers if you post them over at http://forum.cakewalk.com/tt.asp?forumid=26. HTH.

On edit: You could try and use the LAME encoder: http://lame.sourceforge.net/index.php. It's free.

dude, that is so naive. your question is the equivalent of asking, "can i change lead into gold." MIDI is NOT an audio format, it's merely insturctions to a synth about what notes to play. how can you be taking a class on this stuff and be so fcuking ignorant? there would have to be some kind of synth builtin that converted midi to wav and then, and only then, can your project be exported in an audio format, mp3 or wav or other.

why don't you just play your midi in cakewalk and similtaneously capture the audio in some audio capture app. there's even ones that'll capture directly in mp3 format, like total recorder, for example. i personally use audacity, which has both mp3 and ogg encoding builtin.

and of course, if you use a multi-channel sound card, you'll need a mixer

Pro Audio 9 does not have built in MP3 export, it was a 19$ add on I believe. The best bet is to export it out to wav and use an external converter to do the conversion.

well, thanks a shitload you asshole. Of course I f**king know that MIDI is not audio. If you were familiar with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 at all, you'd know that it uses GM sounds the whole time, and as SA Pig said, it has no audio exporting engine. All I wanted to know was A, to confirm that there is no way without purchasing an add-on to export audio, and B, if there was a way to export seperate MIDI tracks instead of one big gigantic file.

(This is because I find PA9 to be amazing for my workflow, but a pain in the ass to integrate, because I use FL Studio. Therefore, I was wondering if there was a way to export individual tracks in either MIDI or WAV format into FL Studio and use it that way, maybe assigning a VST, etc.)

You do bring up a decent point with an audio recording app. I already have Audacity, but wasn't aware that it could record internal audio.

**p.s. whoop: typically, to have 3 posts and criticize someone who is knowledgeable enough about music--as in, has been in the scene long enough to know that it's there and actually has a legal copy--to know about Pro Audio 9, it's not a good idea ;)

Darryl

I am familiar with it and no it doesn't use GM unless one of your MIDI out ports is set to a GM device. And it definitely has audio export. It can export to wave, mp3, and real audio. Newer versions can use the Pro Audio 9 or Pro Suite CD to authorize the mp3 plugin. It came with a dedicated version of Fraunhofer (mp3enc.exe). Cake 9 was pre-instrument plugins but does support DX audio plugins or wrapped VST's. You do have to record the output of your MIDI devices as audio but they will export just fine.

It may depend on your OS and audio hardware. The audio ports didn't show up under Windows XP for me at 24bit with any driver configuration but did at 16 bit. Also MIDI playback was fine but record was very early. ( An .ini variable was added after v9.x (SONAR) to ignore MIDI in time stamps.

Probably the only wasy you could export separate MIDI tracks is to copy them one at a time into a new project, save them as MIDI format 0 or 1(instead of .wrk), delete that track and paste the next one.

- the number of posts doesn't increase a person's knowledge, their ability nor anything else. all it proves is that you have the minimal computer skills to be able to register to a forum and post... essentially zero. you could have a million posts and you'd still be an idiot.

- you think you're knowledgeable about music? that's hilarious. even more funny than that moronic question you asked. anyone who uses faggy loops studio and makes monotonous techno type muzac is no more knowledgeable about music than rappers who use a turntable as an instrument.

- owning a legal copy of an app gives you no implicit knowlege of an app... or you could have bought a thousand copies and gained the answer to your question thru osmosis.

- and considering what a tard you are, you giving advice to others is what's not a good idea.

Agreed. If I recall correctly, CWPA's mp3 codec stank anyway.

It's the same command line encoder Opticom used to sell for Fraunhofer. (Prior to Mp3 Producer Professional.) It never was Cakewalk's codec.

Yeah, well, it was, like, 6 years ago. I'd still recommend just converting it, for free, with the same codec, offline.
