For God's sake won't someone make something that uses crappy old midi and new, beauteous OSC?

Is it possible to add into FL a kind of slide that uses the time/pitch function of the lovely little slide dots but that defaults to the pitchbend control in VSTs within the piano roll?

I actually love how the slides work SO much that I'd say it's brillianr: slide to this note in this much time, and you can see it laid out before you.

Especially useful once you notice that you can have 128th note slides for fast, accurate tremolos and the like.

Thanks for the reply, Gol. I am aware that the slides in FL are per-voice and achieving that with MIDI+VSTi would be kinda impossible.

Exactly, runagate. You took the words right out of my mind. :)

These might be ignorant questions, but what would it take to convince (both hardware and software) developers to adopt OSC? If MIDI is very limited, why do developers insist on using it?

So, with VST3, Steinberg had the opportunity to start supporting OSC?

I may be wrong, but I think OSC is more a system that offers 'freedom' rather than strong specs. That is, even if OSC was supported, you'd still have to define a system to own triggered voices & send them messages/get messages from them (because the way FL plugins work is a 2-way communication - voices can send the host messages too)

I have only ever used FL, so I don't know if other hosts also have their own built-in generators... well, do they? If yes, do they support slides and such like FL? Or arey they in fact host-locked VSTi plugins?

I am assuming FL uses it's own proprietary system, and maybe other hosts also use their own protocols (if they're not host-locked VSTi).

Damn it's about time the devs got together to decide on a new standard and stop kissing MIDI/VST ass. :hihi:

Maybe gol could sell the merits of the FL protocol to the other devs?

Sorry if I sound like an ignorant fool.

there are other plugin systems, proprietary or not (DXi for ex). But a system works only if it's adopted as a standard, not because it's better. Even MIDI is still there, while you can imagine that it's quite easy to make something better 20 years later.

I've been asking this pretty much ever since I started posting here. 2 decades is a looooong time in the audio world.

Fine, just ignore me like everybody else. I'm going home. (Well, actually I still have about 6 hours left to my shift but at 6 I'm going home. Really.)

Maybe this could be done?
Interesting though perhaps I'm not following it completely.

bobsled just posted that Usine just got Osc so perhaps I won't much bitch about this but really the future of music evolution depends on advancing beyond 1980's midi.
