Thanks for the free plugin - and the debate everyone. I agree with the idea that it is pretty easy and fast to dial in the best of whatever Pushtec can give. It's got a pretty fast interface for me to dial in mids. I haven't tried the highs yet. I am noticing that I have to really crank the bass to get a sound but that's ok - it's about sound not numbers - I just keep cranking till it sounds reasonable.

It's a very fun plugin. I wouldn't know how it compares to a real Pultec since I haven't touched one. I am comparing the sound to about a dozen or so other software EQs I'm doing a personal shoot-out with - trying to EQ 'Back in the USSR' by the Beatles so it's better balanced. That's why I haven't really gotten to the highs yet... :D

Thanks for the clips too guys - I'm listening when I can in my hotel...mostly phones - then car stereo - haha the life of a gypsy!

Did you actually listen to the files I posted earlier? It would be interesting to see if you guys can hear/appreciate non-linearities or not. It would give me a good perspective of what the general public hears. I'm simply suffering from the "once you've seen the truth about the matrix, there is no turning back" syndrome. :hihi:

What exactly are we listening for, bmaniac? I could hear subtle difference, I think...

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger...I'm not hearing it either but I'm at a disadvantage in the hotel here - I tried a set of DT770 and DT880 phones I brought with me but I don't hear much of a diff - add to that the simple fact that I'm a barbarian and there you go ! :hihi:

I take it this isn't a test for the ipod crowd bmaniac ?

Yes, the difference is quite subtle. What I would like to know is, which of these files do you prefer? Don't try to hard, just do some blind switching between them and simply find out which one you like the sound of most. :)

It's more obvious over speakers I think as there might be some slight compression going on too. I had a hard time hearing it on my headphones as well but on my boom box I can hear it quite clearly. It's also more of a "feeling" than precise pinpointing of what has changed. However, could be also a slight volume difference in the files. This is what I'm trying to find out as well.

Cheers!

B and C are brighter and seem slightly saturated and/or compressed. I liked B.

Wow, on monitors it's really a lot more obvious. I forgot to mention that I listened on headphones last night - K240DF.

Yes, I think it actually might be a bit compressed. Thanks for the comments. I'm learning a lot from this!

Yes, it really is. That's why I suspect some low level compression going on there as well. AKG K271 Studio headphones here.

By the way, sorry for the thread hi-jack. I'll create a separate thread with an opinion poll.

Cheers!

Well, before you leave the thread you should tell us which is the Pushtec. I only listened a couple of times, but I liked B & C better than A, too. Mind you, that could have been volume, or even something inaccurate in the test...

...what did you actually DO?

No, none of these files has the Pushtec on it. This has nothing to do with the pushtec. I just posted the files originally in the pushtec thread as an example of non-linearities (which something that mimics a vintage unit should have, IMHO). Now I'm just more interested if people can intuitively actually hear/feel them. It's a test to see if it's any use in mastering to run "home studio" mixes trough tube gear/transformers to "warm up" the material. I've always had this feeling that in the end, even if most people don't really "hear" the difference, they still pick the one with some extra non-linearity processing in it, intuitively. That's what this poll is about.

Cheers and please vote in that poll!

Oh, cool - will vote when I go out to the studio.

Back to Pushtec - that user interface is still making me go

Love watching the knobs sweep between presets, and the info window is awesome :)

does anyone else find it disturbing that you have the jump from 30->60hz on the bass?

20 hz and 30 hz do almost the same thing compared to 60 hz .. i'd like to have something like 40 hz as an option ..

or something like 25-35-45-60-100 ..

Post

or maybe just something completely esoteric that makes you listen more instead of looking at the numbers ;P

hold alt during turning the frequency knob...

...and rtfm for god's sake before posting a complaint in a thread which is surely more work.

Indeed. An entire octave isn't precise enough for bass.

I still like this EQ a lot.
