and whose fault is that?M'Snah wrote:oh well, you cannot be too careful. if a moderator decides it should be removed, then that's his right. That's why he is a moderator and most of us are not. The sad thing is that this thread turned into a whine about moderation now, instead of finding samples.
Google sample trick. (Find lots of samples)

That's probably true, so it comes down to judgement and being sensible. Is it more important to prevent possible misuse of samples than it is to help people find legal ones? That's what the mod has to decide, but someone who is more idealistic (not me) than pragmatic (definitely me) might choose to edit a post that I wouldn't. I'd rather give people the benefit of the doubt.M'Snah wrote:if a moderator decides it should be removed, then that's his right.

it was me ...
... the trick that was posted showed how to search the 'back end' of websites for sample content allowing viewing of just sample files in a standard hierarchical folder view ... this may possibly have allowed access (dont know didnt try it) to the 'storage' areas of commercial sample sites ... KVR hosts the official forums of quite a few commercial sample companies ... i for one wasnt willing to take the risk of exposing them to possible illegal exploitation ...
... id hope most people here know how i operate as a mod and that i ALWAYS try to be fair and have a light touch ... i mod the way id like to be modded as a 'normal' member ... as such not sure i appreciate some of the responses here but its your perogative to moan i guess ... if youre really pissed off about it im totallly happy for you to contact ben directly and make a complaint ...

Phz was right to delete the link. There's no way you could tell if the samples were legit or not. Trust me, it's too tempting a trick to use, you're better off not knowing what it was.

is this flame-bait, or what?
you do know that the second sentence only makes "THE TRICK" more appealing,
and the first one is simply untrue?
OK depending on the folders you look into there is no knowing were the file came from,
but if it is a sample you recognize it is more likely to be problematic than not, no?
also if you are browsing "www.SiteA.com/FolderB/index of...." then surely checking out siteA would provide some clues at least?
Furthermore since the trick revolves around the absence of an index.htm any leaks are easy to fix and most likely absent to begin with as far as commercial sampleproviders are concerned.
if they do this for a living, i'd wager they protect their stuff...
Lastly it would have been nice of you pHz to at least try if it does pose a threat,
and edit if it does, all this pre-securing against possibly possible dangers that is getting so common nowadays is getting on my nerves

apologies for being blunt but i have pretty much nothing to add to my post above (other than having since checked it IS possible - though by no means easy even though it only took about 3 or 4 pages of googling - to come across samples of questionable origin using this method) ... if you REALLy dont like it that much PM ben ...tatom wrote:Lastly it would have been nice of you pHz to at least try if it does pose a threat,

Please not to take offence pHz!
Nothing personal, just that this "entmündigung" is everywhere.
But weird reliabilties for what goes on on websites aswell, so your move is understandable.
no thanks, really
i am fine with the offerings of genetic junk et al.

I appreciate his position on this, but I think it would be better to treat everyone here as responsible adults (and yes, it often seems quite the contrary) and let them make their choices on how to use technology. To simply delete the link says that we can't be trusted, and it's obvious enough that one would have to go to some effort to find these putative back doors to sample sites.Teksonik wrote:Phz was right to delete the link. I think it's more about the business relationship with devs. Which is fair enough - more people would moan if a dev pulled out of KVR BECAUSE of this thread.
