WR, before getting the TonePort, make sure that it'll work with the laptop's USB. Not all lappie USB will provide enough current to bus-powered devices.

It'll power the Guitarport okay, and its been checked out with a few other things including a MIDIsport 4x4 and a REmote25.

In fact, I just bought a little external hard drive enclosure that came with a neat little power daisy chainer that lets you use the power from two USB slots into one USB device. I dont actually need it for the hard drive, so there's obviously enough power off one socket for that.

So I reckon that should be okay... It'll be a little while before I swap, though....

Cool, just givin' ya the heads-up. It seems to me that once upon a time (might be ancient history, like the "AMD Chipset not good for audio" folklore) some laptop USB didn't provide bus power at ALL. If you're powering a hard drive, though, I can't imagine there being a problem.

This is all really great; however, I would like to use Gearbox/ToneportUX2 live and I can't

( There does not seem to be a way of switching tones via midi program changes. I know Gearbox settings are changeable from midi messages but to be able to switch Tones (presets) by one click of a pedal (Behringer FC) would be fantastic. I know you can send incremental changes for Tones but that is no good if you need to press a pedal 9 times to get to the patch you want whilst changing chords!

I can't afford to spend $200 to be able to doing this with the VST version. I wonder why they haven't yet built this functionality into it yet? I actually asked about this when they first released Toneport.

Or is there a way?

There's still no good way. I agree that it's weird.

The only thing I've even thought of is to make a SynthEdit creation, store each and every associated MIDI CC for the tone in question, and trigger the plug-in to send a "batch" of CC messages to Toneport. Kind of like a macro or a .bat (er... batch!) file.

a. I need to know specifically what the cpu usage WITHOUT hardware is. If it's like NI GUITAR RIG.....then....rig it is!

b. So, let me make sure I know what is going on.....if you have the hardware, you can pay 199 and get the "software version"? Do you need to use the hardware to use the software?????

c. line sucks is going dongley do? I did not know that...................chriminy.......ilok, logicpro, syncro"soft",........wtf? I need another usb port for my usb port...........

d. I have podxtlive AND from the way back machine.....guitarport........why the f**k should I care?....on mac you can use either along with any other soundcard......

Well, if GR is like a granny smith's worth of cpu usage then Line6 is like a golden delicious.

No. If you have the hardware, you can pay $199 and get the "plugin version". Depending on what hardware you've got (ie Toneport, Guitarport) you may already have the "software version".
And yes, you need to have the hardware connected to use the plugin.

The soundcard is effectively being used as an authorisation for the software, yes.

I have no idea. why the f**k do you ask?

....on mac you can use either along with any other soundcard......

How many instances of your XTLive can you use at once?

I have the PODxt, and downloaded gearbox 3.0. It'll add the VSTs automatically to your vst folder, and you can add an instance of it to a track without authorization, tho it appears to be in bypass mode until authorized. However, you can check and see what you amps, effects you will get.

I only have the (free) power pack, so missing from the bundles are the bass packs, fx packs and vocal amps.

What I'm thinking tho is that it'll cost me the same to buy the silver bundle as it would be to purchase the upgrade and the additional packs, so I can't see the advantage to the upgrade at all.

To top it off, the DI unit that comes with the bundle seems to be more feasible to take with my laptop (I do 95% of my music outside the house!).

Finally, I wonder why they couldn't simply do an effective demo version by unlocking one amp and effect to play around with prior to purchase..

Hm... as soon as this is out for GuitarPort, I really consider upgrading... but first I need to get the extra packs (100bucks) and then the VST for 200USD? Woha... for this I could get a lot of other stuff instead.

Sorry if this is dumb...

I have the UX2 - its great BUT when I wanna record guitar in Live5 I have to open (and mute) Gearbox.

Would the plug mean I could just use the plug and not have to open Gearbox in the background to just sit there?

You could even record the guitar clean first, and use the plugin to add amp and fx later.

As a side-note, they Gearbox-must-be-open limitation has been lifted with the latest drivers, to accomodate people who don't always need Gearbox open but want to use it as an interface.

Haven't tried it myself, but that's what we've been told on the Line6 forum.

and to answer whyterabbit, I setup a project with 8 instances of the vst, including one where the vst was piggybacked to a second instance. This project has about 20 tracks of audio, stylus RMX doing drums, and tonewheels doing organ and cpu never exceeded ~25% on either core of my 4800x2.

Cool; shoulda said I saw something to that effect on the Line6 pages last night, but Ive been somewhat distracted the past couple of days.
