for a small local broadcasting i am looking for a vst plugin for mastering our final audio tracks in our videos. What it needs to do is limit peaks to -10db, and make too soft parts louder
prefferably freeware

I love it when folks suggest stuff I like...although I like it better when they bring up new stuff I haven't seen. I guess it's because with each plug I learn something. Same crayon name + different crayon brand = different colour.. Speaking of crayons, erm, limiters simple can be sooooo good to start. Kjaerus Classic Master Limiter?

, and it's great to see new members ask for freeware!. Depending on the host that you're using, there may be some mastering tools available already (e.g. Tracktion, Orion, ACID, etc) all come with their own included plugins. If you're not yet using a good host, you might want to take a look at Reaper, AFAIK you can just download and use it, to see if it is what you really need right now.

It sounds to me like sandoz is looking for more than just limiting. From my own days in video post-production I think it's also about a fast way to avoid tedious volume automation or "per-clip-adjustments". For such a purpose I would recommend some compressor action prior to limiting. I would presonally try some parallel compression (compressed signal mixed with the uncompressed), followed by a slow leveling compressor with a fairly long release.

I never did video, would it be a good suggestion to master the audio separately (in an audio host) and then put the mastered audio back in with the video? Or does that not help in this case (workflow, horses for courses, etc)

any tips on what plugins? It will mostly be used for speech
we prefer free ones, but if a paid one functions better, thats also possible

For what you want to do I will first suggest the top of the line paid option. There used to be a plug in called Neodynium which was just about made for this, now it's been bought and is distributed by Roger Nichols digital under the silly name of dynam-izer.

What's so special about this plug for this type of work? Well, it's a compressor AND an expander; furthermore, you can select multiple dB band that it will act upon, instead of frequency band (although you can play with those on the key side) a simple but extremely effective concept for the type of work you suggest. There is no other plug that does this, freeware or paid for.

For freebies, I would suggest Vanilla compressor http://www.chunkware.com/?page_id=4 first as it sounds good and his very versatile but doesn't have a GUI (uses the host one, could be a problem). Also look at the fish fillet seriesfor a very competent deesser and also at the Buzzroom free BuzComp line for transparent compressing.
