One of the things I like about Reaktor and Guitar Rig is it's easy to switch between different sample rates - in Guitar Rig there's even a "High res" button that basically processes the audio at twice the sample rate set by the card. It would be nice if it was possible to do this at a host level as well instead of having to directly access the driver control panel and set samplerate globally. Are there any hosts that have that sort of easy samplerate switching?

So you mean,for example, that you want to have your audio card/interface be running at, say 44.1khz, and let the host application do all it's processing at 96khz?

I can't really remember right now if there is any such host. But in any case converting between samplerates at a high quality with minimum loss of frequency bandwidth can demand quite a lot of CPU power. Don't forget that the samplerate conversion to the higher samplerate and back would have to be done to every audio channel/track that the host uses...

AFAIK one can use the ASIO4ALL driver for such tasks, but still I see no real benefit but a waste of CPU resources, just like Xenakios wrote...

Yes that's what I mean. I know about the CPU cost but it would be more efficient for me to be able to just press a button in my host to play end especially render at a higher resolution than have to open up my soundcard control panel and change it globally (which still has the same CPU cost anyway but means having to close the host etc first). In Guitar Rig there is a high res button you press - it costs 2X the CPU - I can afford that sort of overhead for most of my projects - I don't use lots of tracks or synths at once and value quality over quantity anyway.

SAWStudio will let you render your tracks at any samplerate then build your mix at a different rate if you choose. For example; I typically work at 44.1k sample rate and get my mix where I want it and then change the projects sample rate to 96k to render the mix and then choose 44.1k as the mix sample rate. SAW will upsample each track to 96k, build the mix, then down sample the mix file in one step and it does this on the fly w/o altering the orignal tracks. Way too cpu intensive for live monitoring, but it clearly makes a difference in compressors and other plugs that benefit from higher sample rates.

Oh god - Saw studio!! (i.e. lots of money)

I have tried the demo but didn't realise it could do that. TBH I found it over complicated so even if it can do that (which is cool) that capability is outweighed by how hard it is to navigate the interface - I couldn't even work out how to monitor my playing live (at least when I tried to do what the terrible help file told me to do it didn't work)

Don't know why more hosts can't do this though - it would be a great feature in any app I'd have thought.

In Renoise you can either change the samplerate on the fly, or choose a different samplerate for rendering as the one you're running it at.

Logic allows you to set the samplerate.

Only if you have already set the soundcard rate to the highest setting - i.e. it will give the option of 44, 48, 88 and 96 if the card is already set to 96 but if the card is set to 44 it won't internally double the samplerate in the same way Guitar Rig and Reaktor can.
