Many of our customers are interested in a WS-format version of our ethnic instruments sample libraries. So we planned Ethnotronics a long while ago and the production started already in March 2005. Since then we had several distractions, one was a business issue with the used wusik-engine, another was the failure of our download server system at streamload.com (now mediamax.com). We have two new download server systems now, one is tradebit.com and the second is mydatabus.com. Both are reliable, finally, double proved.

Long story short we've finished the planned release beta-version and demonstrated it at Musikmesse Frankfurt 2006. It was a quite successful presentation and Ethnotronics was accepted as another great ethnic instruments product from bitr. But in the meanwhile the market changed a bit and other products appeared. The wusik-engine was developed with further features too. And we received hundreds of mails with instruments to consider too. We got some angry mails from customers too who waited for the Ethnotronics download availability. A few ordered the current CD version though, even the incompleted content version or one of our existing products like “Ethnic & Folk Instruments” and “Mediterranean Atmosphere”, both are Akai format.

So we were in a situation to revise the entire product as well as the download distribution system. Klaus was not available for Ethnotronics because he was hired for several other projects including Steinberg Cubase 4 and the new HALion One, Creamware ASB synthesizers and Alesis Fusion and more. He'll tell you more about this in an extra thread.

The existing Ethnotronics content did not meet the same sample editing and Presets quality like our other products, one of our sound and sample editors simply did a lot of crap and we had to replace his position by a new person with a real product competence. Editing ethnic instruments is very different to most of the other samples. Steinberg did some changes with the HALion player too, so we had to consider that for this version, which is very important because the Japan market is Mac driven.

Concerning the product content we had to react to the newly released ethnic instruments products by other companies, so we decided to increase the content with many more instruments. These instruments had to be organized, we hired experienced players and went to our usual recording studios like www.studio-tonmeister.de for new sample sessions. In fact we nearly doubled the MB size of the previously planned content.

Although the improved content is much larger than the previous one we decided to keep the already announced retail prices. Now for the date of release. Because we did a big mistake to announce Ethnotronics so early we're still a bit announcement-shy and Klaus instructed me to make only “now available” postings, nothing else. Be sure that we're working hard for the quickest possible release date and even we can't wait for that. We're grateful too that we have so many patient customers who are fans of our quality products and although we didn't look good with this issue they all understood the really difficult circumstances we had, or still have, to finish another great bitr product. So please don't ask me for a release date now, be sure that we'll release it soon as possible. Again, if some one is interested in purchasing one of our existing Akai-format ethnic instruments products for the meanwhile it's possible to upgrade later to Ethnotronics for a special low fee. The free of charge VSampler V2.75 can read Akai-format very well and perhaps this is an instant alternative for some one.

So you can see that sometimes it's not that easy to release a product as planned. bitr is a small company and frankly we have a manpower problem to fulfill our own schedule. Let me know if there are any more questions or instruments on the wishlist for Ethnotronics we should consider. And not to forget: Thank you all for your kindness, your patience, and that you like our products!

Sincerely

Julia

A full and frank explanation. Thank you.

Thanks Julia. I gave up caring about the release date for this - it arrives when it arrives.

However, I'm far more interested in the change of content etc... Is there a proposed list of instruments or similar? I'm still very interested in this production when it comes out and I would love any teasers you care to throw our way in the meantime.

With Wusik 3 now offering disk streaming will this be taken into consideration with the proposed content? Ie you could possibly get much larger soundsets for certain instruments etc. etc. etc..

So any discussion about the content is very welcome as far as I'm concerned.

Julia and Klaus,
I second that : okay, you made it very clear that a date is out of the question.... BUT, now it's up to you to keep your potential customers in the loop, and give them some solid details about the "new" Ethnotronics, which would sustain their interest, and would chase away the "vapor-smell" of Ethnotronics.
Thanks in advance !

Thanks caleb and sirbellog!

The list of instruments increased, so we can say that we considered nearly everything from our customer's and kvrians wishlist, even some very rare chinese folk instruments. And exactly this is why one of our sound editors failed, it's definitely neccessary to know those instruments in original to redesign them in the sampleplayer. This doesn't mean that it's hard to map a Fu Yim Gong, but a Wa Teki and Rabab. So it took a while to find out even the correct offical names of some instruments. But we're happy to have now a really full instruments list, although there might be some we still haven't captured as they're really hard to get.

If it helps I can post the latest instruments list to get you an impression about the release content now. Let me know!

Yes, the vapor-smell. We learned a lot about this now although we already released 4 ethnic instruments products through the years, 2 for bitr, 1 in association with Sonic Reality and 1 we did for Soundburst. But all this doesn't help very much because Ethnotronics seems to be a very special one, even for us. In fact the only real solution is the availability of the release version.

For the meanwhile we can keep you updated about the improvement and the current production status, I hope this helps a bit.

The disk streaming feature is not needed for the most ethnic instruments, but for some it's very interesting. Especially the Didgeridoo and Alphorn samples can be used way different with disk streaming. There is the continuos breath technique and this can be performed with both instruments. As result the samples are extremely long, 30 seconds or longer. With disk streaming you can play several of this samples at one time, we never heard a more powerful ethnic instruments megastack like this. The subtile modulations of the samples mixed together are creating unheard harmonics and you can create kind of morphing effects too. This can be done with acoustic instruments only.

The new multitimbral feature with the WS companion is another great improvement, although it's not part of the WS-engine, but we consider this for our WS-related products though. When using TSW Pro and Ethnotronics this might be one of the most powerful pop/world music workstation in the market. So we care still for smaller MB sized ethnic instruments variations too, without the disk streaming in this case, just with the WS-engine.

Post

Julia,

Why not release a version of the instruments you have now and then you could add the new ones?

Just a suggestion. :)

Yes please that would be great.
It might help generate a lot of good conversation about the content.

For example - YAY @ didgeridoo! I really wanted a good didge sampleset, but I've held back on buying anything. Ethnotronics is now going to be my didge centre. :)

Just out of curiosity - with WusikStation moving ahead a bit - the multi-timbral add-on coming up and the disk streaming, is it worth just focusing on the WS format rather than go for the Halion Player version as well?

I'm just wondering in which ways a Halion engine version is going to offer significant advances over the WS engine for more realistic playback?

If it helps we supply everything we already have and in all currently available formats too. Beta-versions might be not the best idea for the most cases, what should we charge for an incompleted version? But the mentioned 1.0 versions of the existing libraries as they're part of Ethnotronics, just other formats.

I recently got Wusikstation 3 and therefore I'm quite interested in a w3-version.

Alles Gute!

Regarding the ws-engine <> HALion player:

Both players are pretty different, the ws-engine is the more synth-engine player and the HALion player is the more sampleplayer. The HALion player provides a polyphony of 128 voices and a multitimbral user interface right away, a Waldorf type filter, can handle stereo samples and can be upgraded to the HALion sampler. The HALion player comes with 8 Control Knobs, each Preset is programmed with an individual Knob setting. The ws-engine allows the addition of 2 wavesequence slots and an easy-to-use 4-layer timbre per Preset. To make the Ethnotronics system easy we're offering a bundle of both engines for a really attractive price, even if you purchase one player system later.

All our ws-engine products are WS3-format compatible, so Ethnotronics can be used with the Wusikstation 3 too.

julia - this is great, indeed, and I THANK YOU for being straight-forward and honest with us. As a potential customer - this type of dialog is what impresses me (I'm in the Int'l Oilfield Service business....and we run our business in the same way).

That is indeed an awesome list of instruments for Ethnotronics, julia. I have no doubt in the quality of the instruments, especially since you guys could have released it in its previous state, but didn't want to because of the one sample editor that didn't do his job. While that probably has caused you grief and money, you still decided not to release it.....that is very admiral and we have to thank you for not going ahead and selling an under-quality ethnic instrument as could have.

Anyway, back to business - that's an awesome list, julia - you can count one customer here and I'll gladly stand-by waiting for you guys to finish Ethnotronics up. A couple of things, though:

1) on the acoustic list - I don't see a sitar! although you have an electric sitar....is this right?

2) i'm dying for bagpipes, so I hope you have a couple of good bagpipes, Irish, Scottish pipes.

3) will the WusikStation engine come with the package or will it be an "expansion pack" for Wusik owners. I don't own Wusikstation, but rather ManyStation (Wusikstation 2) + I DO NOT intend to purchase Wusikstation 3.

4) Same as above - will the Halion player come with that package or as an add-on for Halion owners? I don't own Halion, but if there's more flexibility, I may go for it. will it be dongled as well? (I LOATH DONGLES!!!)

that's it for now...busy day here....friday's always are!!!

Thanks a lot holymoly!

Yes, there is no Sitar in the list. We know the Manytone Sitar and their sample is defenitly the best we ever heard. So we decided to remove the Sitar from our to-do list.

Our bagpipes are pretty good, even with slides and with the complete drone bordunes plus several effects which can only made with bagpipes. I'm sure you know what effects I'm talking about. We designed a bagpipe ensemble too, it's not a real ensemble as this is only possible to record in the public with too much environment noises. So we recorded several bagpipes in the studio one after the other (this thing is loud like nothing else btw) and then we used the sample mix function to layer each single sound to an ensemble effect. Sounds guite good.

Owners of the Wusikstation don't need to buy the ws-engine once more, just the soundsets/Presets packages. This saves you money.

The HALion version is always including the player. If we get a lot of demand for the library only we'll will think about this for sure. But you should consider that the player doesn't cost too much, so if it's because of the money there will be not a big difference then between the player version and the library only version.

Yes, the dongle. We at bitr are not devoted fans of dongles. But the Steinberg player only works with a dongle. And we tried everything what can go wrong when installing the Syncrosoft communication with the dongle. So if anyone will have trouble with the installation routine we can help with instant trouble shooting.

Post

Wow, I'm glad this project isn't dead.
What kind of bagpipe did you use, I hope not only the scottish Great Highland or similar?
Good bagpipe sounds are always interesting for me, especially Gaitas and other rare european types.
I'm mainly interested in wind instruments samples, but your sound list has some goodies.
Ethnotronics is still on my wishlist.
