Depends on whether something comes to me before I start or if I go at it with a blank mind. I often try guitar or piano (sometimes mandolin) to find a melody or chord sequence and work from there. Sometimes if I need inspiration I just play around with a few preset sounds and improvise over what I already have.

Right now, I'm messing around with found sound and field recordings. Mess around with it, see where it gets me.

(shamefully) I admit that having played the guitar for too long already, I was only very recently introduced to this. Simultaneously the introducer hands me a slide and says "let go".Shane Sanders wrote:One cool thing you can try is to experiment with an open tuning on a guitar. ...it's like this massive vista of new opportunities opened up.
the last tune I was playing with was some "natural" minor seventh. what I did was just tuned the guitar to a great sounding open minor chord, and let the slide do the talking. felt like a cowboy.
can't remember what exact tuning it was but thankfully it was all recorded so I can decrypt it.

for some reason i ended up playing in an open G with the high e remaining for about 5-8 years, there is a name for it, it was in a thread awhile back but i lost the various guit tunings link (anyone got it?)...but no i got the opposite experience, i'm discovering standard tuning...but for slide, open G is still my friend

Cool. Yeah, if I ever started to do this a lot, I'd be sure and use that free VST that allows you to save notes within your project. Then just fire up GTune and make a note of the note-name and Hz value of each string for reference. Might save a lot of time and frustration if you set projects aside for a while.Kingston wrote:(shamefully) I admit that having played the guitar for too long already, I was only very recently introduced to this. not an open G in the bunch?
I'd need another guitar, and another high output pickup to try out.
