Maybe this thread is too full already, but I have to thank Aleksy for this...I'm mixing my album in Acid, and just for the hell of it, whenever I needed an EQ boost (as opposed to cut) I used Overtone GEQ instead of the onboard sony track EQ...HOLY MOSES...it's on like five songs so far. A WONDERFUL freebie, honestly Aleksy, you shouldn't give away shit like this, it's too awesome. The upper mids are just GORGEOUS. I love it on snare, vocals...incredibly musical and useful, and the bands are exactly where I would want them to be. THANK you once again.

this and pushtec are my two favourite EQs - both of em free and they both rock :band:

I just want some presets :help:

Thanks for your comments once again. Plug-in is free, that's true, but get ready for more testing in a couple of weeks: we are going to implement all remaining 'todo' things discussed here. Possibly, Mac VST (PPC, but maybe Universal Binaries) is going to appear as well (Mac AU is left for a bit later time - still needs studying from our side).

Just wanted to say, I finally got a chance to try out your EQ on my Windows XP Home Computer. I used Whitney Houston's "On My Own" for reference.

Sounds great! :D

I like the frequency curves you chose. 7 bands per channel were pretty common back in the days. This could be why it offers the right "Tone" I was looking for.

Sounds less "Processed" that is all too common with 2/3 and 1/3 octave EQs.

I guess it goes to show you more does not equally mean better as far as EQs are concerned.

Thanks Again. 8)

Yes, sure, Overtone GEQ should sound 'less processed' because its bands are 1.5 octave bells - that's pretty wide in comparison to ultra-narrow 1/3 octave EQs (especially band-splitting ones): that means less phase coloration per band.

yep...i was giving GEQ a better run last night as well (no chance to really put it thru its paces yet), BUT! I REALLY like the way it's working. I'm not an EQ Guru, but testing it against the new 8-band EQ in Live 6.01, Kjhaeous Classic EQ (screw it, i can't spell it) and that Pushtec EQ (real nice + free, but damned confusing to work and (for me) to get the results from) = GEQ really came out nice + what I like best about it, it's so friggin' easy to use!!! (and REALLY nice to look at and understand + the option of the groups is way too cool). I've come to realize I DO NOT LIKE graphical Equalizers - too much fiddling around and getting nowhere with those graphs. 8)

Alex...not sure if you've got a newer version, but I mentioned before and I think you said you were going to implement it is...the 1-button A/B. It's nice just keeping the cursor there over the button going back and forth instead of having to move it everytime between the two. Hmmm...that gives me an idea...."what if I could map that A/B to a Computer Key or MIDI note?". :)

Really good stuff, Alex....I hope to see the GUI of this beauty be exported to your other stuff as this GUI is simply beautiful...your other stuff looks totally out-dated now compared to your free EQ. :)

Post

Thanks for comments.

Sure, 1-button A/B will be there. Tying it to some key is a nice idea - however, I have my doubts about possibility to implement it under VST (host may 'eat' some keypresses as far as I know - for example, TAB key looks like a good candidate).

:tu: sounds great, Aleksey! Keep us posted once you've got Overtone updated, meanwhile I'll be using this little fella more in my recordings!

just a note off my head, Alek - anything you come up with, that is as easy to use as OverTone - REALLY fits the bill for someone like me (music hobbyist) as the more complicated it gets....the more confused I become and harder to dial in the results I want (too many options!). This is why I have really shyed away from your more sophisticated tools (and others as well) as I've really come to terms with myself that I do NOT know how to properly use them + I don't have the time to learn how to use them + I really need something easier to use and quicker results. Overtone EQ has hit the nail right on the head wonderfully for this kind of functionality.

Think of it as the difference between a Mac vs PC - does the PC REALLY need to be that complicated when the Mac has been able to make the experience less complicated and actually enjoyable? The Mac is undeniably the most beautiful operating system as well.

I find it hard to believe that all these sophisticated tools with graphs, numerous options, etc. are really needed to get a "good sound" esp. since recording/producing music has been going on since when...the 50's?? and albums back then (like The Beatles) still sound great with less sophisticated hardware than what is available today. At least that is what I've have come to conclude. Of course, you have the flip side that loves more complex tools. I think the likes of Overtone and ElioSounds AirEQ, both have the right idea and we should see more tools that makes it easier to dial in decent results in less time. Even the new 8-band EQ in Live...is just too complicated for me; not that I couldn't learn how to use it, but I don't have the patience esp. knowing something like OverTone is available to make my EQ'ing experience more enjoyable (and WAY FASTER to dial in the results I need!).

Anyway, Alek - that was basically a long-winded complement and hopefully we'll see more tools come from you that function (and look) as easy as OverTone. :)

I think that sophisticated tools REALLY allow to get better sound, if you are able to use them. In the case of Voxengo plug-ins at least, it was never something like a 'showoff - see how much of little everything we've got' - I just wanted to give as much variants as possible, for given DSP models.

I do plan to rework existing plug-ins and minimize the number of available controls (where possible), but I'll try not to create 'one trick pony' plug-ins. Overtone GEQ is a bit of that category, though. :) (since its underlying DSP model does allow a bit of variants - at least in harmonic enhancement department).

Is there any chance for this Eq to work in Windows 98SE?

Post

I'll see if I can get it working there - though, this is not guaranteed right now.

Why would you need any presets for this Eq?

Off topic a bit. Sonar 6 has a nice little button on the plugin interface that allows all keyboard commands to be captured by the plugin. No more bickering between Sonar & the plugin about keyboard modifiers and preset naming.

It's these little things that Cake does that mean so much to me.

Anyway, time for me to give Overtone a try. But I use your Voxformer all the time. It's a great plug, sir.

well...I surely agree that more complicated tools DO give you more options to shape the sound, but for folks like me....stuff like GlissEQ really scares me whereas OverTone is right up my alley. While I'm sure GlissEQ would give me better results, Alek, the difference (I think) is minimal to the *average ear*.

For example...say I recorded a song, done all the mixing with EQ or whatever...and then played it for my wife, who likes music but not near as in love with it as me - would she hear the difference?? Surely she wouldn't as she's listening to the whole package, not just a single instrument or bass kick, like we do. It's like when I ask her:

ME: "hey, listen to that bass groove, honey...isn't that bad-ass??"
WIFE: "uhhh...I can't hear it...all I hear is the song"
ME: "damn...it's right there!! you can't hear it??"
WIFE: "no...I still can't hear it - stop bothering me..I want to listen to the song!"

:)
