I lack the patience to create synth sounds from scratch, so rely on presets/patches and then tweak them to my liking.
I know about PatchArena.
Any other download sites I should check out? (Again, I'm talking about patches, not samples).

These sites also have links to other similar sites so you'll stay occupied in finding new patches.Just copy and paste that web site including the http. Synthzone.com is also another place to find mad links to similar websites. Also, if you are into Soundfonts, visit www.sf2midi.com, lots of free soundfonts there, you'll get lost. Have fun!
