hmm... maybe THIS is the DAW thread i should be following

i totally DESPISE pattern based recording with every fiber of my being. i put less than a week's time total into my drum machine because i hated it's "whatever you do... don't get funky and rush then lag the beat in waves funk destroying click track" EVERYTHING i recorded with it sounded rigid and quantized even at full 96 or even 192 (2X) PPQ quantization.

i want a daw that i can simply turn on like a tape recorder and do my own thing to using my internal "click track" then go back to it and copy and paste (or loop) the fragments into songs.

i refuse to use a clicktrack. i hate them. they're evil mind control devices! LOL

the only thing i can envision is recording my guide track as audio acapella then painstakingly pasting notes and sounds that line up with it entirely in the audio domain.

for many years, i've had the impression that cubase was the only way to break free of those nasty wretched robotic click click clicks. i already have samplitude V8 SE on DVD, but worry that it too plays by the same quantize all life out of the beat game as my HR-16.

anyone know what DAWs will let me work the way i want to instead of driving me nuts with a click track straightjacket? this has probably been the big subconscious question that stopped me dead in my tracks once i discovered how much i despised pattern based recording and my barely used drum machine.

i want to record midi like audio.

oh... and whatever you do... don't try to rush something like a high hat before the beat or lag it after the beat doing pattern based unless you create extra patterns just to catch the lags and rushes. *phtooey!*

+1 for MUTOOLS LUNA, the whole idea behind it is that it is simple to use

Many many many hosts can make you happy, Gambitron. Did you try Tracktion already?

Maybe you should get a hardware multitrack recorder? Most DAW are tempo based and use a click, altho you can just turn the click off and use 'em like a tape machine if you want to.
I use Live for recording most things, and if the track doesn't require a strict tempo I turn the click off and just ignore the tempo setting.

You should also look at Phrazor - very reasonably priced, immense potential, just plain easy to use when you get the hang of it.

My vote for Tracktion- Cheers, m@

I also think that Tracktion might be the best solution for your stated needs.

another vote for tracktion here (heehee ... but then i would wouldnt i ???)

... if your friend is just starting out digitally then tracktions fairly basic MIDI will be enough ... as his experience grows he can always add something like energyXT or phrazor that loads as a plugin and adds massive MIDI editing power ... for recording and manipulating / mixing audio tracktion has a great balance of ease of use / speed / power ... it DOES have a few missing features that might be important even for a beginner as of version 2.1 but these look like theyre being addressed in the forthcoming T3 ...

... but as has been said if it seems like tracktion has a steep learning curve then your options are pretty limited ...

Tracktion gets my vote too. It's all done on one screen, easy to set up plugins and comes with a lot of stuff to get you started.
It's my main choice for a DAW. I've tried Sonar, Cubase and live but it's just so easy to use and you can get very professional results using it!! :)

I'd put in another plug for MUTOOLS Luna. It's definitely easy to get going, and there's a great support forum here at KVR. And there's an on-line tutorial using that program that's a great intro.

It might be a good idea to buy a copy of COmputer Music magazine, which contains a cut-down version of Luna free, plus a lot of plugins (some of which are very good). It would certainly give you a reasonable starting point from which to explore other stuff.

Ableton Live 6 would be my first recommendation, unless you need notation, in which case I'd go for Cubase

+1. If you have an M-audio soundcard you probably have a bundled Live Lite somewhere.

Care required. It comes with a cut down version of LUNA, not LUNA Free. CMusic is much more capable than LUNA Free. Which is nice for the price of the mag. (Although LUNA full is a damn good price, too! And it's still in its highly active development phase, with plenty of user involvement...)

And it's pretty easy to use and, as has been said, that's it's main reason for existance.
