is there any way to run reason 3.0 through cubase se? actually i'm quite sure you can, so how does one go about doing it? what does it entail and could anyone describe the process for me? i'm asking because i'm considering buying reason for the sheer sake of learning a bit about using rack equipment...plus i think it would add a whole new dimension(s) to my mixes.

very easy.
1. load Cubase
2. load reason with a song
3. Click on rewire mix channels in Cubase.
4. play

It is that easy. If I may just expand on that a bit, for the absolute beginner: you'll find the panel to activate ReWire channels under DEVICES/REASON.

Newbie question, but what's the use of running those together. I'm using CubaseSX3 and I've seen Reason 3 running quite a few times, and to me it seems like it's just another sequencer but just a bit more fancy-looking (and less clear
). What am I missing?

turn off midi-sync in reason so that the reason sequencer doesnt play.
reason then just acts like a rack of external midi devices. you might have to do a bit of midi-mapping for automation though.

Really? Interesting take. With Reason, the focus is on an all-inclusive, sound generating machine, for starters. Instead of using plug-ins, you use Reason's "Devices" to play synths, drum samples, REX loops, sampled instruments and effects; all in a descending rack environment that can be freely (and literally) 'patched' to mixers, effects and even each other. This is very different than Cubase, which works with external VST plugins that are hard-wired into the mixer, and up until Cubase 4, you couldn't reconfigure them.FragK wrote:Newbie question, but what's the use of running those together. The second, possibly most crucial difference, is that you can't record audio in Reason; heck, you can only play back audio either via loaded samples or loaded REX files. And Cubase has a much richer, complex Piano Roll and MIDI editing features than Reason. I'm not knocking Reason, love both these programs to bits, but I think this is a pretty big difference.
So why do I use them both in ReWire mode? First off, doing so allows me to put VST effects and use Cubase's mixer faders, etc, on Reason's tracks, really deepening the possibilities while using an interface I prefer. Also, I can use Reason to work very quickly, and do things that SX 3 can't, like preview loops in sync with the song. And not to mention you can use Reason alongside your audio tracks in Cubase and other VST plugins and synths, and Reason uses a fraction of the CPU of comparable instruments. So you've got a real loop-synth-sample-audio workstation with these guys combined.
