i already have 2 recent (and 1 old) issues of CM and just had to grab the one with samplitude V8 SE which is what i intend to use on my next DAW dedicated PC.
as to click tracks... you absolutely cannot avoid them with an HR-16 (or SR-16) drum machine. once i realized that, i quit trying to use mine out of disgust.
so you CAN record unquantized midi with DAWs then... cool. that's definately how i want to work. i might "rescale" some tracks into pattern based to be able to use SYNC for some effects, but in general, i'd rather just improvise at the exact 91.3954243 BPM that my brain AVERAGES out between rushes and lags. LOL
as to hardware recorders... i already WASTED $1,000 on a fostex R-8 8 track that wasn't working 100% and that cost a whopping $8 per 15 min of recording. not only that, i never had a sequencer or mixer to use either. i thought it would have an onboard mixer like a cassette deck.
i DEFINATELY want a sequencer so i can go back and tweak pitchbends, velocities, timings & filtering etc., but i DON'T want to have to do everything to a clicktrack from the start. that steady tick-tick-tick just hypnotizes me into perfectly quantized robotic tempos whether i like it or not.
my internal metronome like likes to speed up on 1 and slow down on 3 best. click tracks don't allow that. i want the click tracks to follow MY tempo... not the other way around.
