hi
I'm trying to help a mate of mine get set up with some basic free recording/mixing software, and was wondering if anyone can reccommend a free audio recording program, that also hosts VST plugins and instruments.
He wants to record himself singing and playing guitar, and then overdub harmonies and perhaps add some synth parts too.
I've found Kristal Audio Engine, Air Rack and LUNA lite for him so far ...

thanks :D

I'd recommend Reaper if he is mostly after dealing only with audio. It isn't free, but its demo form is uncrippled, I think it nags you once a week or something.

Cheers @shamann ... i'd totally overlooked Reaper. :)

That's cool that you're helping someone out. I wish someone would have done the same for me years ago. If you can get the 'light' to go off in his head, you'll have given him a great outlet for the rest of his life. The technology can be overwhelming, so good luck in getting things explained without it seeming overly scientific.

I did some recording with him a couple of weeks ago, and it completely blew his mind that all i used was my laptop, a couple of microphones and a USB audio interface. It's really made him think about what else is possible with his music ... :)
You can hear 3 of the tunes we recorded here

bump ... any more free hosts out there?

Well, its not free but I don't think it gets much cheaper with all the features....N-Track Studio does everything you could ask as a beginner. ($50)
