I was to assume that i could import Mp3's for Dj'ing with Ableton live, but in the browser window mp3 files do not appear, do i need a specific codec or does live lite just not run mp3's. Its really got me stumped.

Prolly 'cause it's the "Lite" version.

but is that the actual reason? this is quite important, all i need for it to do is run mp3's and it could cost me quite a lot if i find out later i could have done something simple as this in live lite 5.

I don't know the Lite version... but in the full version of Live 5 all my Mp3 files show up in the browser like any other file. This suggests that it is a Lite version restriction.

Anyway, if MP3s aren't showing up in the Browser, I think that it's safe to say that they can't be imported. If you want to rule it out for sure, you can try to drag and drop an MP3 from the regular Windows file browser (or whatever file browser you normally use) and drop it onto a track in Live.
