No, I get that push is boost and pull is cut. What I do not understand is why someone would want to dial in -both- boost -and- cut for the same band.

There's probably separate Q for each. I wondered the same thing, and never tested (I'm pretty much a "use it and abuse it" guy for these things) fully, but it's the only thing that makes sense. You're right, though, a definitive answer beats speculation and guesswork.

On the Pultec EQ, when both adding and subtracting gain at the chosen frequency you were able to quickly contour a scooped mid shape. It was a popular "clean" setting because the broad dip through the middle "enhanced" the program clarity by slightly reducing an often crowded frequency range, whilst also tipping up a bit of low end.
Try setting Pull to 13db and Push to 18db with the low frequency at 100hz. This is fairly close to the classic Pultec clean shape...though without the original character of the Pultec's passive filter circuit topology. To add a broad gentle rise to the top end of the above, set the hi-freq to 10khz, with Push to 3db and bandwidth at "0". Leave hi-freq Pull at "0". Now you have a close approximation of another classic Pultec shape. The slopes on the filters at these settings are very low and broad.
The Pultec could also do a nice job on heavy guitar dominant mixes where the "bite" regions got to be a bit much on the ears at times. Try setting the low band to 80hz with a Pull of 7.5db and a Push of 14db. Set hi-freq at 16khz with a Push of 8db and a Pull of 4db. Set hi-freq bandwidth to 8 and hi-freq atten to 20khz. This carves a shape that takes some of the screech and clank out of the hi mids, whilst retaining much of the mid range torque. It also kicks the low end for extra whomp, and gooses the highs above 5khz for extra cut.
Note that none of the other mid range filters on this plugin are are used for these shapes. The original Pultec EQ had no such filters.

Sorry chaps, forgot to add that the hi-freq bandwidth should be set to 8 for that last setting. I've edited the original post.

I finally had an opportunity to test and play with pushtec eq.
While it's relatively easy to obtain -good- coloring for the mix, (personally) I found that pushtec EQ sounds at it's best best when followed with ElectriQ/Posihfopit with it's filters set to -transient- mode.
Good to know, they're both on my CD now, maybe on a usbkey, it's fine having good tools at disposal to (potentially) have them everywhere I go, without any guilt.

- ElectriQ Posihfopit gets a stylish, easy-on-eyes, grayscale look without having to install skins (i.e. built-in something, into dll)
- pushtec gui gets a little "less glitzy": something along bluetubes simplicity would be nice (but in easy-on-eyes grayscale style, as it is now)

...or would that just mangle and create new problems? I don't know if you are saying Pustec handles the phase the same or differently as it's vintage hardware cousin. I guess it's different?
