You obviously like that band THE VENTURES, but IMHO you can't compare the drumming of Mel Taylor with Tony Royster, Jr's.. The difference is worlds if not UNIVERSES.. LOL! and Tony's drumming most definately got soul..Yagushi wrote:While I can objectively admire his proficiency, the playing still leaves me cold... it's all flash and no meat IMHO...KleVeR wrote:Yeah, he probably dindn't watch the whole clip...Killvehicle wrote:Well he did.. tony ROyster Jr. is incredible man.Sascha Franck wrote:Well, if he'd only played a single groove once...KleVeR wrote:Hi,
don't know if it has already been posted here, but this kid is one hell of a drummer:

That kid plays so damn dynamic, fast plus extremely tight!!
And he was only 12 at that time.
Mel Taylor is one of my favorite drummers...
Check the utterly minimal drumkit and the simple, straight-forward beat... definitely no flash but considerably more soul IMHO...
Louie Bellson's certainly a good drummer! but he could learn 1 or 2 (million) tricks from Tony Royster judging from those two videossonarman wrote:You've seen the young pretender now meet the master -
people tend to get unfair in their judgement whenever some young tallented guy arrives and bursts their bubbles and lets longtime heros and idols look like amateurs

Professional drummers generally don't play solos, they play songs. They listen to the other musicians and interact with them and make the song move and keep everyone else playing together.
I have checked out this Tony Royster guy fairly extensively, and IMO he is to drumming what Yngwie Malmsteen is to guitar playing.
This is a fine thing if you have a band that is a vehicle for them, and if you like to listen to one 'wow is he fast' part after another, but if you want to play some, say, music, they are sort of annoying.
There is a reason why so many more people listen to Mozart than to Paganini, even though Paganini was a much faster and more impressive violinist.
But while I am here . A pretty decent drummer, in a really great band playing great music.

I see what you mean..
but the fact that tony royster can play so extremely fast, rhythmically versatile and accurately doesn't mean he isn't able to play simpler patterns or slower or that he can't accompany a band.
solos are there to show your skills..
tony royster does actually play in several bands.
btw the part you've quoted wasn't meant towards one single person..
cheers

Yes I know. Like I said, I have researched him a bit, because I wanted to see how his career developed. Sadly he has ended up in some (IMO) goddawful numetal band.I see what you mean..

But the thing about such players is that they tend not to listen to other musicians. If they end up with a genius like Zappa (Like the mutant stunt drummer Vinnie Colaiuta) then all is well and they keep growing.
But usually they just end up being pretty dull. Look at Billy Cobham. He was years ahead of his time, could play faster than Steve Gadd on Meth and pioneered all sorts of techniques.
And his solo albums are so damn boring I dare you to try to listen to one. Not a memorable song among them.
I am all for technical prowess. But I personally prefer that it be used in the service of great music, not just to make people say 'wow!' The latter gets old pretty quickly.
Which is probably why the poor kid is now playing in a band whose songs that sound like a cross between Dashboard Confessionals and Killswitch Engage.
EEK!
