What's the 'Hilbert' control do?

I have absolutely no idea.. but maybe look up hilbert transform in google?

It surely sounds a bit different with it on, a bit "smooth" somehow. I don't know. You can hear it when you use short attack and release times.

EDIT: here is what Wikipedia has to say.

I can't say for sure what it does in the compressor, but I'll guess it applies some kind of a phase shift to the signal.

Post

I guess it uses some hilbert transform filter to perform 90 degree phase-shift for the envelope detector. In short, the trick is to sum the (rectified) detector signal with the 90 degree phase-shifted version of itself, to minimize the envelope ripple for low frequencies. Envelope ripples modulates the signal being compressed, causing distortion.

Awesome, thanks for the info!

I was wondering this the other day... so I googled "mjcompressor" + "hilbert" & found this comment on the REAPER forums archive:
throw the "hilbert" on for some extra low settings of attack and release without distortion

Yes, thanks a lot for helping. I must admit I've mostly used Blockfish before, and the added controls here are confusing me. I find it hard to dial in anything with real punch. But this plug is worth spending time with?

well, honestly, though its a nice one, but in the freeware realm i'd go with vanilla compressor, its in the league of the best commercial offers.

Define punch? MjCompressor can certainly create punch if you want to. Just use long enough attack times (sometimes even absurd times like 500ms or more).

MjCompressor easily fits into the commercial league as well. It's just very different from vanilla compressor (actually IMHO it's far superior too). Biggest problem is that it eats CPU like crazy and can be too 'smooth' for certain applications.

Think of it this way, MjCompressor is more like the Sonalksis plugin, smooth, even at extreme settings. Vanilla compressor is more like a typical VST compressor plugin (reminds me a bit of the timeworks compressor X thingy), agressive, plain, but at relatively high quality (that is, low distortion).

Ah, i didn't test out the new version. This one is really good, but CPU usage is much too high.
Regarding Vanilla: it really behaves similiar than Sonic Timeworks, but sounds a bit smmother. I had the ST comp on Scope, which sounded better than the DX equivalent - unfortunatly, i have nothing seen in VST land which comes close to Scope Compressors (especially Vinco and the De-Vice one)...and here, on MJ, one sees the reason - it would use too much CPU still.

Always had a soft spot for that Timeworks CompX.

Funny thing about that plug...when I first gave it a go, I noticed that the SOFT/HARD knee transfer functions were reversed. Choosing the SOFT knee actually gave you a hard knee curve, and choosing the HARD knee, in fact, gave you the soft knee transfer.

Was always a bit of a lark to me that no one else seemed to notice this...not even the developer, apparently. :hihi:

I've used the MJcompressor a bit more, even on 2-bus. It does sound pretty good to me. Think anyone could be bothered to skin it and port it to UB for good measure? I'll mail Magnus about it, but expect him to have lots of other stuff to spend his time on.

Thread is about half a year old, but I'd rather bump it than start a new without the advice already given here.
